About The California

King's Cross and St Pancras stations are just a short walk from Belgrove Street, making The California a practical base for anyone arriving by train or heading off on day trips further afield. The surrounding Bloomsbury streets also have plenty of pubs, restaurants and eateries nearby, so there's no shortage of places to eat once you've settled in.

The hotel itself has 60 rooms, kept clean and looked after by staff who are consistently described as friendly and helpful. Rooms do run on the smaller side and some can pick up noise from the surrounding streets, so light sleepers may want to bear this in mind. There's a restaurant and bar on site, breakfast is served daily, and free WiFi is available throughout.

Beyond the rooms, guests have access to a garden, a lift, luggage storage and laundry service, along with business facilities and meeting rooms for those travelling for work. A concierge is on hand for local advice, and free on-site parking is available for anyone arriving by car rather than rail.

Hotel staff amazing. Emma, Innocente and Lynette as well as all cleaning staff I met were service minded and attentive. Location was perfect. Room was high standard and valuable integrated AC that was easy to operate. 4th floor and no elevator was a bit of a struggle but did me good. Breakfast was a really good arrangement and the back terrace was great for online meetings I had to attend. The only real drawback was the loud flushing of toilets and hearing floors creek and people talk as they passed in the hallway but no big thing. Will likely stay again! Good value for money.

Stayed at the California Hotel in King’s Cross and overall had a really lovely experience. The location was fantastic, close to everything, easy to get around, and the hotel felt very safe. The hotel itself was very clean, and the decor was adorable with a cozy, almost Harry Potter-esque charm. A special thank you to Innocence, who checked me in and helped throughout my stay. She was absolutely fantastic and made the experience feel very welcoming. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that there’s no elevator, which can be difficult with luggage- although they did offer to help me carry mine- and the soap dispenser in the bathroom was mounted so high that it was impossible to reach while taking a bath. There were also two really nice towels in the room, but no washcloths. I was also upgraded, which was very kind, and the room was really lovely with a skylight, but there wasn’t a window in the room so it felt like it could use a bit more airflow, even though it was very bright, and the skylight felt really special. Small details, but worth mentioning. Otherwise, a very cute and comfortable stay and I’d happily return.

Beware that this hotel is in desperate need of a refresh. I had a rather horrible stay - fortunately for just one night. There is no lift, so be prepared to carry suitcases up narrow stairs and across carpets that look dingy and like they haven't been deep cleaned in years. The room I was assigned was filthy too; the walls had grime on all of the high-touch areas like the door, near the light switches and electrical outlets. The heating and cooling system was the worst because it was clear that nobody had changed the air filter in ages. It was caked with dust and dirt. The door is opened by key with no security lock, so beware or bring your own security lock for the door once you are inside. The mattress was lumpy and saggy, and the walls are terribly thin. I could hear every word of the television in the room next door to me, causing me to find a pair of earplugs to try to get some sleep. The Wi-Fi is also terribly weak and on the fourth floor was unable to support continuous connectivity which was frustrating for streaming or video calls. The front desk staff were incredibly kind and helpful, but I would never return to this hotel because of the lack of cleanliness and overall lack of comfort. Yes it is only a 3-star hotel, but there are much better options.

Great hôtel ! My friend and I stayed for a short time (only one night), but we were really well taken care of by Yahaea at the reception. We checked-in pretty late (8.30pm) and checked out pretty early (6.20am), and we had a good night. Beds are comfortable. We had a ground floor room and were not very disturbed by any noise. The hôtel is just across the train station and around are a million different restaurants, it's very practical. I recommend The California, I hope I am able to stay there another time in the future ! Thanks again for the great service :)
