About Wardonia

Start the day with breakfast at Wardonia before heading out into central London, with a pub, bar and a handful of restaurants all within easy reach for evening meals. The hotel itself keeps things simple, offering free WiFi and luggage storage alongside free on-site parking, which is a genuine rarity this close to the centre.

The 66 rooms are straightforward and compact, some more so than others, but they come with comfortable beds and decent showers, which makes up for the lack of space. Staff can be inconsistent, so don't expect a fuss, but the location does much of the work here.

Argyle Street puts Wardonia within walking distance of King's Cross and St Pancras stations, useful for early trains or a quick trip elsewhere in the city, and the British Museum is also nearby for anyone keen to fill a day with something other than travel.

I wanted a budget hotel by Kings Cross and chose the Wardonia. I booked a single room and although the room was very small, I knew I wasn't staying at The Ritz and as I only wanted a bed and shower for a couple of nights the Wardonia was ideal. I checked under the bedding (as I usually do) and found everything to be clean, as was the rest of the room. The shower cubicle and tiling in the shower unit looked new and the shower itself was good. I found the staff on reception and housekeeping to be friendly and efficient. I got the plug stopper stuck in the wash basin and after I reported that it was sorted very quickly. It's an old building and as I've stayed in similar buildings elsewhere, I knew the stairs would be tricky and there would be no double glazing (fortunately I'm a very heavy sleeper). Travelling alone, I felt safe at the Wardonia. I see one reviewer said they didn't feel safe and put their luggage against the door but the door lock in my room was no different to elsewhere. You get what you pay for and I've paid more for less in the past. Some hotels these days you don't even have a receptionist at all, have to do it all yourself digitally to get your room swipe card and I felt more secure at the Wardonia with someone on the desk 24/7 than I did at those places.

The name sounded really familiar and until arrival, I couldn't remember why. I stayed here in 2012 but this time I wasn't alone and it was after travelling so we had large suitcases and struggled to maneuver them though the halls and up the tiny stairs. It's more like a hostel/hotel than a traditional hotel although the prices do not reflect thisband the double bed we paid for was definitely not a double. Even doing top and tail it just wasn't possible to fit two people in without one of us constantly falling out. So we took turns sleeping on the floor but there's so little floor space that whilst sleeping on the floor we had to have our legs underneath the bed. It's only redeeming feature is the location, a 5 min walk from St Pancras and Kings Cross. The double room is OK for a lone male that's going to have a night on the drink and not be fussy about where he gets some sleep before travelling but I wouldn't recommend for lone females and staying as a couple is pretty grim. Bathroom so tiny your feet are in the shower whilst sat on the loo. Not for those with claustrophobia or mobility issues. I think the staff must get a lot of grief because they actively try not to engage unless it's essential. No chance of small talk or even having any acknowledgement such as "good morning" returned. We made do but stayed at Travel Lodge on our return so we could breathe and relax. Half the price, about 20× the floor space. Bed that fits two people comfortably. It was such a reflief and it felt like absolute luxury in comparison.

Really tiny rooms. Photographs do not showcase that. No lifts. The stairs to go to our rooms downstairs were so narrow and with a twist at the top. Very challenging for one person to take a suitcase down. No toilettetries. The receptionist kept changing. A couple were helpful. The location is fantastic. Walking distance to the kings cross station, shops, pubs, restaurants.

If all you need is a bed for the night, a toilet and a shower, within very easy reach of Kings Cross or St Pancras Stations, the Wardonia is ideal. Rooms are small, but the hotel is very honest about this when booking, so that isn't a problem. Our room was very clean, with fresh bedding, clean shower and toilet, tea making facilities, and was as quiet as you'd expect a hotel in this location to be. The lack of breakfast and dining facilities, again something the hotel is open about, are not a problem, as there are plenty of options available within a few minutes' walk. Staff were friendly and helpful. We've stayed here several times, usually as an overnight while waiting for the Eurostar, or a coach to the airport, or after a theatre visit, and it's perfectly adequate for that purpose.
