Lyndhurst, the New Forest's unofficial capital, has traditional coaching inns, country house hotels and smaller B&Bs clustered around its high street, making it an easy base for exploring Minstead's church, gardens and lanes before heading further into the Forest. Cadnam, just off the M27, suits visitors arriving from Southampton or further afield who want quick access to both Minstead and the motorway network, while Brockenhurst, with its mainline rail link, appeals to those travelling without a car.

Whichever village you choose, expect a strong seasonal rhythm to pricing and availability: New Forest accommodation fills up quickly through the summer holidays and on autumn half-term weekends, when the rutting deer and turning leaves draw crowds, so early booking is worthwhile. Many properties trade on their forest-edge position, offering gardens or paddocks where New Forest ponies wander in from the open Forest, and a number of country house hotels have spa facilities or restaurants worth booking in their own right.
