Camping in Minstead

Minstead sits inside the New Forest National Park, one of the few places in England where camping directly on the open Forest is tightly controlled: wild camping is illegal here without express permission, and the Forestry England-run New Forest campsites nearby are the legitimate way to sleep under its oaks. Sites such as Matley Wood, Denny Wood and Longbeech, all a short drive from Minstead, are set directly among ancient woodland and heath, with New Forest ponies often grazing right up to the pitches. Booking ahead through Forestry England is essential, particularly for summer weekends, since these campsites are deliberately kept simple, with limited facilities, in order to protect the landscape around them.

The terrain around Minstead itself is classic New Forest: gently undulating heath, ancient oak and beech woodland, and boggy valley bottoms that can stay wet well into late spring, so a well-drained, level pitch matters more here than at many other campsites. Ground can be soft after rain, and the Forest's free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys mean food and rubbish need to be kept properly secured at all times, both for your own supplies and the animals' welfare. Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable camping season, when drier ground and long evenings suit the open, informal pitches Forest campsites favour, though many stay open through a milder shoulder season for those willing to pack warmer kit.

For a more comfortable alternative, glamping sites on the fringes of the New Forest around Lyndhurst, Cadnam and the wider Minstead area offer bell tents, shepherd's huts and safari tents with proper beds and, often, wood-fired hot tubs, combining forest scenery with none of the exposure of a standard tent pitch. These sit just outside the most sensitive parts of the National Park, giving easy access into Minstead's lanes, Furzey Gardens and the churchyard while offering a softer landing for anyone new to sleeping under canvas. Whichever option you choose, respecting the Forest's grazing animals, fire restrictions and Site of Special Scientific Interest status is essential to keeping this landscape as unspoilt as Minstead itself.
