About The Montagu Arms Hotel

The Montagu Arms occupies a creeper-covered building in the middle of Beaulieu, the village on the Beaulieu River that gives its name to the estate and the National Motor Museum. There has been an inn on the site since 1742, and the current hotel keeps the traditional country house style: panelled rooms, open fires in winter, deep armchairs and a bar that locals still use. It is a change of register from the newer, more design-driven hotels elsewhere in the Forest, and that is largely the point.

There are 33 rooms and suites spread through the main house, the gardens and a courtyard block. House bedrooms are the most traditional, with antique furniture and floral fabrics; the courtyard suites are lighter and more contemporary, and several have their own entrances, which suits guests bringing dogs. Sizes vary a good deal, so it is worth reading the room descriptions properly rather than booking the cheapest category and hoping.

Food is the strongest single reason to stay. The Terrace Restaurant has held rosettes for many years and works to a forest-to-fork approach, drawing on the hotel's own kitchen garden along with local growers, fishermen and estate game. Monty's, the adjoining inn, is the more casual alternative and serves pub cooking and local ales without the need to book weeks in advance. Afternoon tea in the drawing room is a fixture.

Beaulieu itself is one of the better bases in the Forest for people who want more to do than walk. Buckler's Hard, the preserved eighteenth-century shipbuilding village on the river, is a couple of miles away; Beaulieu Abbey and the motor museum are within walking distance; and Lymington, Exbury Gardens and the Solent shore are all short drives. The hotel suits couples, older guests and anyone who prefers a properly traditional country hotel to a boutique one.

Spent three nights with our flat coated retriever in a courtyard suite. Very nice room with direct access to the garden. Staff are all really friendly and the dining options were very good. Monty’s offered good quality food without being typical pub food and the Terrace restaurant offered really good food so we did not eat anywhere else. Would happily stay here again.

Just spent the night in the hay loft bedroom for my girlfriend’s birthday and it was a beautiful room in an amazing hotel. We took our two dogs and the staff were so attentive and lovely - it made our weekend. Everything was so well thought out and accommodating. Highly recommended, especially if you have furry friends.

A dog friendly wedding venue in the heart of the New Forest, yes please! I photographed a wedding here recently and it was utterly spectacular. The setting, the location, the attention to detail inside as well as in the gardens... 10/10. This was without the efforts the couple had made to make it theirs for the day too. Ultimately it's the staff behind the scenes who can make or break the success of a wedding day, this lot were excellent. Their ability to plan ahead and problem solve before the problems even arose was fantastic, polite and professional throughout. They made the day even more special for the couple which in turn made my life easier. Even the dinner for the suppliers was fatastic! Thanks team, I'll be back to wine and dine sometime with my wife :) - Dave Zaple Photography

Between amazing and superb! On our way to Cornwall decided to take a stop, and what a spot! Brilliant setup, so much greenery and good taste. We went for a Beaulieu river walk recommended by the hotel and we just got back in time for a superb dinner. We had the guide dog all set by the hotel staff, we were really impressed! Also the treats in the room exceeded all expectations. So happy to experience this truly unique place!
