About The Assembly House, Norwich

The Assembly House is a Grade I listed Georgian building on Theatre Street in the middle of Norwich, a couple of minutes' walk from the castle, the Forum and the Lanes. It has operated for years as a venue for events and afternoon tea, and now also offers a small number of guest rooms, which keeps the atmosphere closer to a private house than a conventional city hotel.

Rooms are individually designed and vary in size and layout, several occupying the upper floors of the original house with tall sash windows and high ceilings. Furnishings are contemporary rather than period pastiche, with good beds and well-specified bathrooms. Because there are so few, they sell out quickly around Norwich City home matches and Theatre Royal runs.

The building's public rooms are the real draw: a grand ballroom, a music room and a series of reception spaces used for the afternoon tea that the house is best known for locally. Breakfast is served in the same setting. There is also a cookery school on site running day courses.

As a base it works well for anyone treating Norwich as the hub of a Norfolk trip. The railway station is a fifteen-minute walk, the cathedral and market are closer still, and the coast is within an hour's drive. It suits couples, culture-minded visitors and business travellers more than families. Rates are noticeably lower than equivalent coastal hotels in summer, which makes it a sound value option in peak season.

We really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful hotel and very friendly staff. We stayed in Room 2, which looked nice on the website but even better in real life. Breakfast was lovely, quality ingredients for the Full English, which were cooked to perfection. Happy to see a beautiful breakfast bar, too. Special mention deserves the Orchard Fruit Salad; heaven with some natural yoghurt. It is a delicious and healthy breakfast offering, put on the menu by someone who really knows what they are doing. Would gladly stay here again. Strong recommendation. ♡♡♡♡♡♡

We visited for the Beauty and the Beast themed afternoon tea in February and were absolutely delighted with the experience. We had the vegan version, which was beautifully presented. The attention to detail was exceptional, and it was just as delicious as it looked! The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit, creating a lovely atmosphere from start to finish. The house itself is stunning. Without a doubt, this was the best vegan afternoon tea we have ever had. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic first time stay for my 30th Birthday including prosecco, breakfast & afternoon tea at the Assembly house (Beauty and the Beast theme). We stayed in room 8, which was lovely, spacious and had everything we needed. The bed was incredibly comfortable! Afternoon tea was delicious and we loved all the fine attention to detail. They even added a surprise candle and cake to the platter for my birthday. There was so much food we had to take some home with us! All members of staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. A special thanks to Jane on Reception for helping us when we arrived. Breakfast the following morning was delicious. Thank you Assembly House for a perfect stay. We will be returning!

Wonderful Cinderella themed afternoon tea. Our only gripe was having 3 instead of the usual 4 finger sandwiches. We've been many times for the various themes and this one was definitely smaller on the savoury parts. Staff were lovely.
