Oak Cottage

North Yorkshire

View on Google Maps

This barn conversion at Thirley Cotes Farm dates back centuries—the farm itself appears in the Domesday Book, though the main buildings were constructed around 1830. Oak Cottage occupies what was once the livestock barn, now converted into holiday accommodation with original timber trusses still bearing Roman numerals carved during their construction. The layout is inverted: ground floor holds a king bedroom and a twin bedroom, while upstairs opens into a single flowing space for living, dining and cooking.

Upstairs, the kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, with an electric oven, hob, dishwasher and all the essentials. The living area has a TV with Freesat and DVD player, while the dining space overlooks the grounds. Downstairs, the bathroom includes both a bath and walk-in shower. The cottage sits on its own enclosed patio with a private hot tub (available for an additional charge), garden furniture and barbecue. Essentials like electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included; travel cots and highchairs are available on request.

The 4-acre grounds include woodland with walking routes, a play area for younger children, and access to surrounding forests ideal for cycling. One dog is welcome. The property lies in the North York Moors, surrounded by Broxa and Harwood Dale forests. Note that there is an unfenced stream in the woodland and a fenced pond 500 yards from the cottage. Smoking is not permitted inside.
