About Foundry 34

Foundry 34 suits those after a straightforward, well-run stopover rather than a grand hotel experience, whether that's a night before heading into the Lake District or a short break exploring Penrith itself. With just 10 rooms, it has the feel of a small, personal operation rather than a large chain property, and its Burrowgate address puts guests within easy reach of the town's pubs, restaurants and walking routes.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi and in-room drinks, and there's luggage storage and business services for those passing through on work as well as leisure. The on-site restaurant and bar are a genuine draw, serving generously portioned food with vegetarian and vegan options handled properly rather than as an afterthought, in a clean and well-kept setting. Breakfast is included, and service is generally friendly and attentive, though some visits have found it a little inconsistent.

Beyond the hotel, Penrith offers nearby golf, entertainment, and further pubs and eateries within walking distance, making Foundry 34 a practical base for exploring Cumbria without needing a car for every outing.

Absolutely first rate experience at this bar/restaurant with boutique hotel style rooms in Penrith. Food was exceptional quality and represented the best value for money in terms of both quality and quantity I've had eating out in a good while. 2 large meals and a bottle of wine for just over £50. Our room was well appointed with a nice en-suite shower room. The bed very large, comfortable and we had an excellent sleep. The cost was very reasonable too. Again excellent value and quality on offer especially when compared to nearby chain hotels. The only negative is the lack of private parking, but the public car park is very close so it really wasn't an issue.. Would I stay again? Absolutely, it would be the first place I'd look.

A smart little hotel in a great location. Friendly, professional staff. Lovely bedroom with en-suite shower room. Huge, very comfortable bed. Good breakfast each morning. Nice bar in the evenings and excellent restaurant (we attended a family 'do' ) the catering was spot on. We would definitely return and recommend this hotel and restaurant. Tiny niggle - no coat hooks in bedroom or bathrobe hooks in shower room.

When we first saw the menu for Foundry 34, I was slightly nervous. It has traditional British pub dishes, some Italian, some American fare, a bit of Mexican and Tex-Mex street food, some Korean, Japanese teriyaki dishes, Mediterranean halloumi and flatbreads, and touches of Indian cuisine through pakoras and curry sauces. But what sounds like the start of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares is far from it. Somehow they are pulling it off and doing a fair job of all the different dishes on the menu. Would definitely eat here again.

The food was okay. Not really anything special in my opinion, certainly not worth what they charge. My fish didn’t have any flavour and was quite mushy. My partner compared his steak to something you would get in Aldi. Nothing that great. Chips were nice and the presentation was great. We ordered a brownie for dessert and asked for a takeaway box. It came on a plate and the server huffed and went back to the kitchen when I reminded him it was for takeaway. When it was brought back out he told us it would need microwaving at home… £5 for a microwave brownie.. lol. Not too bad if you’re staying in the hotel they have upstairs but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back, personally.
