About The Canford

The Canford is a pub with rooms on Cliff Drive in Canford Cliffs, one of Poole's quieter and leafier neighbourhoods between the Old Town and Sandbanks, run by the Young's brewery group. Its eleven ensuite bedrooms are individually styled with a coastal theme, aiming at a boutique feel rather than a standard pub letting rooms as an afterthought.

Downstairs, the pub serves food throughout the day, with a garden that includes a burger shack for warmer months, and the atmosphere leans towards a relaxed, village-pub character rather than a formal hotel dining room. Its position close to Canford Cliffs Chine gives easy access to a quieter stretch of beach than Sandbanks proper, with clifftop paths connecting to the wider peninsula.

The Canford suits visitors who want a characterful, independently minded place to stay within easy reach of both the beach and Poole town, and its small scale means it has a more personal, neighbourhood feel than the larger hotels further along the coast road.

Maria was an outstanding waitress—friendly, attentive, and genuinely made the whole experience better. She checked in at just the right times, made great recommendations, and kept everything running smoothly without ever feeling rushed. Her positive attitude really stood out and made us feel welcome from start to finish. Would definitely hope to be served by her again.

We have eaten here on a number of occasions and brought friends and it has always been good. We are also regulars in the bar and do enjoy our time here. However this time is best forgotten as it was awful. My wife and I both had the pork which wasn’t just overcooked it was burnt in places. I am surprised it was even sent out by the chef. It was covered by the fried eggs so difficult to see until we had started eating. I ate a good portion of mine but my wife left most of hers. We did complain about the food but it seemed more important that we were told how busy the staff had been and how tired they all were. We waited to receive the bill to see if we were offered any reduction or voucher to spend at a later date. We were not. A sad end to the evening and our time at the Canford is now at an end. We don’t usually complain but it is important that you hear this type of feedback.

Sunday roast: The roast was very tasty but small portions hidden by a giant Yorkshire pudding. Take that away and there was very little meet (c40g), 3 small potatoes, a little broccoli mixed with chard. Barely a child sized portion! The desert was a treacle sponge. This time a big portion but it was very very dry inside so mostly not edible beyond a few mouthfuls that had some sauce. In summary, a nice location/venue (although conservatory too hot on a day just 15degrees c), food was tasty but size and dry dessert mean not worth visiting for a roast again
