About The Pulpit Inn

The Pulpit Inn is a low-slung, traditional pub building perched right at Portland Bill, with the kind of straightforward, no-frills character you'd expect from a coastal inn built for sea air rather than show. Its position on the Bill means sea views come as standard, with the Jurassic Coast stretching out beyond.

Rooms are simple and en-suite, with free WiFi and drinks available in-room, making them a practical base rather than a destination in themselves. Downstairs, the bar and restaurant serve pub food including burgers and fresh fish, generally well-regarded for value and portion size, though it's worth knowing that busier sittings can mean slower service and the odd overcooked dish. Outdoor seating makes the most of the setting, and breakfast is included for residents. Free on-site parking and 24-hour reception add a bit of ease to a spot that's otherwise refreshingly unfussy.

Beyond the front door there's plenty to fill the days: walking and cycling routes along the coast, fishing and watersports nearby, and other pubs, restaurants and entertainment within reach for those who fancy a change of scene. It's a fitting base for anyone wanting to explore Portland's rugged edges without needing much else besides a pint and a view.

Location great, decor nice, service was quick and staff were friendly. Sadly the breakfast was poor overall - as a family we had a mixture of the breakfast options and all agreed the produce tasted cheap. The sausage was horrible and didn’t taste of sausage, the eggs were over cooked, the beans tasted very budget. Hash brown was good, mushrooms good. Coffees and hot chocolates were nice. Price was good but the quality of the ingredients let it down. Hopefully it improves - as it has great potential.

Absolutely gorgeous refurbishment of an iconic local venue. The Laming family have done a fantastic job resurrecting this beautiful building and bringing it back to life. It’s just a shame that the staff currently let the experience down. Hopefully, with time, the team will become more knowledgeable, welcoming and attentive, as the venue itself really deserves to shine. Wishing the Laming family every success with this fantastic local venue.

I would give this place a 7/10 because while my meal (steak sandwich) was fine there were a few issues overall diring our visit. Me and my mum came at 1:00pm for a special lunch since I've just graduated uni and she fancied a crab sandwich and had heard good things about the pulpit since it reopened. Upon arrival the place does look lovely and had been done up well, it looks very welcoming and obviously has a cracking view. There were plenty of outdoor seats with umbrellas but it was a bit hot for us so we sat inside, again very nice and the place looks fab. We both ordered and paid for our crab sandwiches and were told there would be a 30 to 40 minute wait for food which we were fine with (as an aside they do do alternative milks for coffees and such which is fab), however about 20 minutes later our waitress comes to let us know the kitchen had run out of crab and asked us if we would like anythjng else. We did say we were happy changing to a steak sandwich and a prawn sandwich. But the waitress said we'd have to go up to the bar to get a refund and reorder as she couldnt do it at the table. She didnt say why but as all orders are done at the bar and there's a lack of wifi I think they might not have a portable card reader. It's interesting to know since if people sit outside they will have to go too and from the bar as waitresses cannot take orders at tables: this wasn't an issue for us and they do make it very clear with signs and such around the pub but just a heads up to sit inside if you have mobility issues. Anyway, our food took another 30 minutes to arrive after we changed the order and looked great, though my mums sandwich came with the wrong bread. She had to back to the bar to get this sorted and the waitresses responce was sharp as she stated she "wasn't in the kitchen" as if to say she couldnt control the bread it came out on. She did then go and fix it for us so there is that and it was sorted out quickly so there thankfully wasn't another wait. The prawn sandwich was awfully wet though and the sauce was incredibly watery but otherwise okay. The prawn sandwich came with crisps and a side salad and the steak sandwich was supposed to come with chips, salad and a chimichurri sauce though the sauce seemed to be missing. The steak sandwich was rather tasty, especially the ciabatta it was in as it had a rosemary taste to it and was very flavourful. The bread was quite crispy and the steak a little bit tough as it was cooked well done (which isn't my preference). However it was very nice overall and the chips were good and crispy with the skin on and solid flavour. The salad was a side salad and theres not much else to say, though I was glad they don't smother it in dressing like some places do. Overall the meal was pleasant other than a few issues. But it was tasty and not particularly expencive for a meal out (especially nowadays). The decor is nice and the pub is dog friendly, it was quite cool inside on a hot day too which was a relief. The coffees we had were alright too. It was disapointing about the lack of crab especially since we arrived at lunchtime before the real rush hit, and the fact there was the lack of communication between the kitchen and wait staff about what was and wasnt available which led to our extended wait. Oh! Also there's a lack of vegetarian options barring cheese toastie, cheesy chips, or a cheese ploughmans. Which isnt ideal. I was tempted to give it 3 stars but I'll give them some grace as they've only opened recently and might still just be settling in to the flow of things. Hopefully they sort their stock and communication bits out because this could be a brilliant spot.

The Pulpit has only just reopened under new ownership and after thorough refurbishment. It has been decorated very tastefully and has high tables near the windows so people can enjoy the views. The food was lovely - the mac and red Dorset cheese was original and tasty. The burger was very juicy - one of the best I've had anywhere. Good selection of drinks, including local beer. The staff were friendly. We visited on a cool, wet and misty evening and they had a log burner going. Lots of outside seating for a warm dry day.
