Mellerstain - Clock House

Scottish Borders

Couples and small families will find Clock House suits a quiet Border retreat. This early-18th-century building, converted to holiday use, comes with two bedrooms—one with a four-poster double, the other with singles—and a single bathroom. The ground floor combines living space, dining and kitchen in one open area, while essentials like heating, electricity, linen and towels are covered; Wi-Fi is available throughout.

The setting is the draw. Clock House sits within the grounds of Mellerstain, a Robert Adam-designed stately home, surrounded by 200 acres of parkland. The Italian-style terraced gardens command views toward the Cheviot Hills and lead down to a lake for peaceful walks. The estate's coffee shop (open on house-visit days) serves homemade food, and there is car parking on site. One well-behaved pet is welcome. Note that the grounds include water features and drops, so those with young children should supervise carefully.

Kelso lies 6 miles away with shops, restaurants and Floors Castle; Edinburgh is roughly 35 miles north. Fishing, golf and coastal walks at Berwick and Holy Island are all within reach. The property does not permit smoking.

Mellerstain is a gem. One of the most elegant houses in the world , open (occasionally) to the public. The architecture and gardens are truly exquisite. Magnificent views , delightful natural gardens, a balanced beauty and a natural delightful ambience that is truly enchanting.

What a glorious place to visit! A bit under the radar as it's not a Scottish National Trust property, this beautifully designed Adam house has been kept in the family since it was built. As a result, there are pieces of furniture dating back centuries, along with many wonderful paintings and the decoration on the ceilings are gorgeous. Still has the sense of a family home, despite its size, everything is well lit so easy to see the rooms and contents. Gardens are a treat as well.

Had a visit today, Monday 9 March. The house is closed for the winter, but the gardens and grounds, over 1000 acres are all open and me and my little doggy, Taylor Swift had the place to ourselves. Would thoroighly recommend for 1000 acres of doggy walks with a pretty house to look at.
