What visitors say
This place is an absolute must-visit if you are traveling through the Scottish Borders. From the outside, it looks like a grand, sweeping medieval castle, but the inside reveals a remarkably preserved 1820s reform prison. Walking through the cold stone corridors and stepping inside the original cells gives a chilling, authentic glimpse into 19th-century prison life. The museum does a fantastic job of explaining how this "model prison" focused on reflection and reform rather than just punishment, complete with interesting inmate logs and historical displays. It is also famously known as one of Scotland’s most haunted spots, and you can definitely feel the heavy atmosphere as you explore! Best of all, admission is completely free (though donations are welcome), and there is a lovely view of the town from the grounds. Highly recommended for history buffs, families, and anyone looking for a unique stop in Jedburgh!
