About Meryan House Hotel
A menu stretching from home-cooked classics to chow mein is an unusual find in a small Somerset hotel, but it's one of the things Meryan House Hotel is known for. Set on Bishops Hull Road in Taunton, this 12-room hotel has built a reputation for its restaurant and breakfast, alongside a genuinely friendly welcome from staff and a quirky, individual character that regular guests seem to appreciate.
Rooms are straightforward, and while the hotel's charm runs deep, some have been reported as needing a bit of upkeep, so it's worth bearing in mind if pristine modern decor matters to you. The property makes up for it with a solid range of facilities: an indoor swimming pool, gym and spa/sauna, a bar, lift access, a garden, and meeting rooms and porter services for those visiting on business or for events. It's also licensed as a wedding venue.
Free on-site parking makes it an easy base for exploring Taunton and the wider Somerset countryside, and there are pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby for evenings out beyond the hotel itself.
What guests say
Friendly service and home cooked food I had a home made chow mein for.my evening meal. Absolutely gorgeous. The room was nice and clean and beautiful gardens to sit in too. I wouldn't hesitate in coming back here again. Highly recommended.

Owners were nice and helpful (the lady was quite forceful) but fine. We chose this hotel as it stated it was dog friendly. We were told that at breakfast our dog wasnt welcome so we could eat one at a time, lock the dog in the car or room. We should have been informed before we booked and should be made clear at booking.com. Unfortunately it was to late to go elsewhere. Our room was not great, wall paper hanging off the wall, sheets that didnt fit the bed and the food vent was outside our window. The smell of the food was awful. Down stairs looked nice shame we couldn't enjoy it.

In our bathroom used ear buds and cotton wool pads had been left over from previous guests. The shower in the room didn’t work (apparently had to move the plug to make it work?!) ended up having to use the sink. Worst of all the water pipes ran through the room and apparently the hose was left on so sounded like Niagara Falls all night so didn’t sleep at all. We were not offered any money back despite having to sleep on the floor of my kids room. The TV in our room was a miniature old thing and there was nowhere to hang, keep clothes. Very strange place to stay would not advise. There’s a premier inn or travel lodge round the corner. Stay there instead.

We spent a lovely weekend here. The breakfasts were great. Although the hotel is located outside Taunton it only takes less than ten minutes to drive into the city centre. Being old and unstable I would prefer a walk in shower, but other than that it was great. I'll return. PS the pub opposite is fun, but maybe not for children.
