A straightforward B&B on Newton Road in Torquay, handy for the English Riviera's beaches, golf and coastal walks.

About Newton House

Torquay's stretch of the English Riviera is on the doorstep at Newton House, with golf, fishing, watersports and cycling routes all within easy reach, plus walking trails for those who prefer the coast path to the car. Pubs, bars and restaurants nearby mean evenings don't need much planning, and Devon's wider attractions are an easy drive from Newton Road.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and drinks provided, and breakfast is included to set guests up before a day out. Free WiFi and 24 hour reception cover the practical side, while outdoor seating gives a spot to sit outside on quieter mornings. Free on-site parking is available, useful for anyone touring Devon by car rather than relying on buses into town.

It's a no-frills base rather than a destination in itself, best suited to guests who want a comfortable room and a convenient spot from which to explore the Riviera's beaches, golf courses and coastal paths.

After reading many of the reviews, I feel compelled to write one of my own given the nature of the responses by the owner. It appears that there are a number of reviews that do credit this location and the host with a good stay (and one lovely defense of the owner from another user very ably writing in the owners style!). I am glad that some were able to have such a pleasant trip. The location of the BnB is also very convenient to the train station and roads in or out of Torquay. We were able to make such use of these roads in leaving the establishment after what for us was an awful experience. As you may guess from other reviews, we were one of a few couples who had booked a two night stay here. My wife and I checked in with no issues and being mindful that we had seen an 8:30 latest check in time, I asked kindly if it would be ok to check in the other members of the group. We knew given the traffic jams on the way down that it may cause delays for the others. The lady we spoke to said this was ok and that she had heard there had been jams. I will say the lady was especially helpful and pleasant to speak to. She assured us that a check in for the others would be fine. I did ask if it would help to take their keys as I understood the others may be quite late arrivals. She mentioned they needed to be there to take them, which was completely understandable and we had no objections to it. She added that there would be no issues with late arrivals. The other reviews more than highlight the issues that arose because of their late arrivals. We left to console some friends which was the reason for our visit. Sadly we were privvy to the rest of the conversations as they happened and ended up having to console two of our group too. Again other reviews do allude to nature of dealing with the owner. My wife and I made a decision to try and fly under the radar when we arrived back. But it was not a pleasant night in, what we felt, had become a hostile environment. I will say the next day my wife and I did leave behind our keys, but had not formally checked out, as we were not sure if we could get other accomodation in time. We were informed that he rang another member of our group to continue a tirade consumed by his own self-victimisation. During which he accused my wife and myself of stealing things from the washroom. While I do accept a lot of time and effort may have been put into selecting the right "eau de grandma" smelling soaps. My wife and I did pack, use and repack our own and opted to leave them behind.. not quite our thing I am afraid. The fact that the room was booked in for another night and we had not formally checked out at that point, suggests the owner had clearly gone snooping through a room that we could still have been occupying. The straw had broken the camels back already, but that buried the poor beast six feet under and we were done. There are a number of brilliant accomodations nearby and we had a very pleasant stay elsewhere.

We had an very pleasant overnight stay here in Room 8. Beautiful room, well decorated, clean, comfy bed, small fridge, fan, 2 seater sofa and lovely en suite. The room faces onto the main road but we slept well. Brett and Rachel gave us a very warm welcome and had a nice chat before showing us to our room... We didn't have breakfast which there is a choice of and I'm sure would be extremely filling and tasty. Would definitely come back if in the area, very well priced.

Hosts couldn't have been more charming or helpful. Good size room and Quality beds, had a very good nights rest. Peaceful even though not far from Torre Train Station. Would definitely be happy to stay again

We moved to cornwall but was unlucky in finding a job there so i stayed at the place i already worked for .but we needed somewhere to stay we have been at this b&b for just over a year both bret and lisa have made us very welcome .they told us there policy of what you can and cant do and we have stuck to there policies we have heard people haveing ago at bret over something that is not his fault when it is explained terms and policys of what is aloud and whats not including age group that is clearly shown on booking dot com i can not understand why people do not read what it states when booking why does the owners always get the blame for people who cannot agree to what is black and white on booking dot com. We personally have never had a problem with ever bret or lisa i am totally happy with what they have done for us.
