Sometimes small and simple is best, and that's certainly the case at Elm Cottage, a minuscule, back-to-basics East Sussex pop-up site set on a 1.5-acre meadow equidistant from Lewes and Uckfield (both 10 minutes' drive). The off-grid pitches are sheltered by mature trees on level grass; you can set up wherever you please. With no electricity, facilities stretch no further than a loo, shower and washing-up sink in the yard, though there is ice-pack freezing and charging facilities available.
The nearest pub is 10 minutes on foot across the fields, with another in the village of Isfield – home of the Lavender Line heritage railway – just 20 minutes' walk away. Note that dogs aren't permitted, as sheep and cattle graze in neighbouring fields. If you need to stock up, there's a major supermarket in Lewes and a farm shop in Offham (15 minutes), where there's also a café serving local produce.
