Camping around Uckfield means camping properly, on a licensed site rather than informally in the countryside: wild camping without a landowner's permission is not legal in England, and the farmland and private woodland that make up most of the High Weald around the town are no exception. Fortunately the area is well suited to sites that do have permission, since the High Weald's combination of small wooded ridges, sunken lanes and pasture gives many local campsites a genuinely secluded, tucked-away feel even when they are only a short drive from Uckfield itself. Ground tends to be a mix of clay and sandstone, which drains reasonably well in summer but turns heavy after sustained rain, so it is worth checking a site's advice on pitching if you are visiting outside the driest months.

Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable stretch for camping here, broadly April to September, when the Weald's woodland is at its greenest and evenings are long enough to make the most of a pitch. May in particular coincides with the bluebell displays that give the nearby Bluebell Railway its name, and with Sheffield Park's gardens at their freshest. Summer holidays bring the busiest weeks, especially near half-term and around Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum's events, so early booking pays off. Autumn has its own appeal, with the Weald's beech and oak woodland turning gold and cooler nights that suit a fire pit, while winter camping is a niche pursuit best left to those with four-season kit given the area's exposed ridgelines and unpredictable rainfall.

For those who would rather skip the tent altogether, glamping has taken hold across the High Weald in recent years, with shepherd's huts, safari tents and converted farm buildings offering a more comfortable way to experience the same wooded countryside. These sites suit visitors who want easy access to Ashdown Forest, Sheffield Park and the Bluebell Railway without sacrificing a proper bed and bathroom, and many are run by working farms that add their own character, from honesty-box produce stalls to farm animals wandering nearby. Whichever way you choose to stay, booking ahead through the site directly, rather than turning up and hoping for space, is the safest approach in this popular pocket of Sussex.
