This museum is an absolute gem. It was our first in August 2026 and I would love to go back again. Very friendly and welcoming staff, decent cafe and wonderful pizza van outside chords this special weekend celebrating all things Saxon. My 10 year old son really enjoyed the Great Dragon Trail which explored the main museum while searching for clues and engaging in lots of well curated craft activities. The Roald Dahl Storyytelling Museum (Children's gallery) was a revelation. A mixture of Dahl's stories and a hands on science museum experience, we played with mirrors, light, sound, colours, green screen filming techniques, minibeasts and so much more. The living history Saxons who had set just for the weekend were incredibly knowledgeable, authentic and approachable. We were able to try on some armour, watch fighting reenactments, marvel at handicrafts, woodcarving, weaving, and spinning, before enjoying a tutorial in Saxon board games. An absolute delight from start to finish with lots to stimulate the mind and soul.

SAXONS EXHIBITION I just wanted to add a specific review about the current Saxons exhibition at the Bucks museum as it is well worth a look if you are not local. Bringing together three Anglo Saxon burials - the fault recent Marlow Warlord, the Taplow court burial excavated in Victorian times and the subject of a display at Taplow Court as well as a cemetery uncovered as a happy by-product of HS2 engineering works, the exhibition combines finds, reconstructed items, diaramas of the burials and videos to provide an informative and engaging display of life in the early middle ages before England had coalesced into the unitary state that emerged after the Viking onslaught. Aylesbury is an easy ride up the A41 from London and the parking in the multistorey was only £3.50 so all us foreigners from neighbouring counties and London can easily visit. Very modern permanent sections on palaeontology ( sea creatures more than dinosaurs because the area was an ancient sea), ancient and medieval archaeology including the most spectacular late Anglo Saxon coins hoard, modern times and natural history are to be seen downstairs as well as exposed parts of the Tudor house. Saxons exhibition is included in the regular ticket price. And go and see the Taplow burial mound and display there on one of their regular open days too.

The museum itself was a gins as the 3rd oldest building in Aylesbury with a Georgian front on a medieval building and it is located in a really beautiful old historic part of Aylesbury that I didn't know existed. That's before we went in to see the Saxon exhibition which was really well done. Lots to interest children and adults. Some really wonderful recreations of speaking Saxons and videos of daily Saxon life. Worthy of a London museum. Well done.

A small but perfectly formed museum that punches above its weight. I've been to several town museums that just have labelled exhibits behind glass with no real narrative. This museum is different. The creative team deserves a massive pat on rhe back for the effort they have put in here. The collection of artefacts is woven into stories around the people (and animals) that lived locally. From mammoths to plesiosaurs through to saxon burials. Of particular note is the effort to make the language under the exhibits accessible to both children and adults alike. Not dumbed down, just really well written. I also enjoyed the dioramas, using actors on screens to augment the stories. It made the whole experience more engaging. It's a small museum, so I'd time a visit carefully to avoid peak times, but it's well worth the admission fee.
