The Friary is a refurbished Georgian country house occupying its own gated grounds in Appleby-in-Westmorland, a medieval market town built along the River Eden. The building retains original features including an elegant staircase, and can sleep up to 15 guests across seven bedrooms and six bathrooms—making it suitable for large gatherings, extended families or groups wanting exclusive use of a whole property. Five of the bedrooms have ensuite facilities; a sixth bathroom with a roll-top bath serves the remaining two rooms.
Inside, the ground floor contains two living areas (one with games including a snooker table), a dining room and a kitchen fitted with a range cooker and full appliances for cooking from scratch. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and electricity are included. Outdoors, the extensive grounds feature a patio with seating, a BBQ area, table tennis, and a hot tub. There is parking for seven cars on site. A utility room with washing and tumble-drying facilities is available for longer stays.
Appleby retains the character of a traditional market town despite its history as Westmorland's county seat, with the castle at the top of the main street and the church at the bottom. The town centre is a five-minute walk away. The location suits anyone wanting to base themselves in the Eden Valley for exploring the North of England, or simply to gather a large group in one comfortable place. Note: smoking is not permitted, and one dog is welcome.
