A 12-room pub inn near Windermere town centre, within easy reach of the Lake District fells and water, with a dog-friendly bar and garden.

About The Sun Inn

Close to the centre of Windermere and the fells and waters that draw people to this corner of Cumbria, The Sun Inn is a 12-room pub hotel with a garden and outdoor seating that make the most of the surrounding scenery. The two-floor building keeps things simple and unpretentious, with free on-site parking and a genuinely dog-friendly welcome throughout.

Rooms are en-suite, some set up as family rooms, and come with free WiFi and drinks available in-room. The restaurant and bar are the heart of the place, serving hearty pub classics and a well-regarded Sunday roast in generous portions, alongside breakfast each morning. Staff are largely friendly and the atmosphere relaxed, though a few visitors have found service inconsistent at busier times.

Outside, there's a picnic area for warmer days, and the wider area offers walking and cycling routes, fishing, horse riding, golf and watersports, plus further pubs and restaurants nearby for those who want to explore beyond the inn itself. Reception operates around the clock, making it a straightforward base for early starts on the fells or late returns from the water.

Nice pub with really good food and service. We were staying locally in a cottage and it was only a short walk to the Sun Inn. Nice range of beers and good seating outside either along the road or in the pub garden. I went twice the first time enjoying a burger and the second time having a lovely bangers and mash (curly Cumberland sausage of course). Others enjoyed the Fish and Chips.

Very friendly and smiley staff, expensive beers at £15 for two pints. The place is in need of a bit of sprucing up. Came here for Sunday roast after seeing great reviews and photos. Big portion size, very tasty nut roast but would have liked a home made Yorkshire pudding and not a frozen one and more veg. Perhaps we didn’t get the usual standard as it was empty when we arrived on Sunday evening but I wouldn’t return.

A group of 4 of us stopped here for lunch. Our German vegetarian family really enjoyed their vegetarian sausage and mash and the vegetarian pie. My husband had a club sandwich which he said was really good. I had a ceaser salad with chicken. The chicken was freshly cooked and moist and the dressing was light. It had a poached egg on top, beautiful. So glad we found this place.
