Pool Bridge Farm

Wheldrake Ln, York YO19 4SQ, UK

View on Google Maps

A quiet site with four unique lakes for wild swimming, set only 10 mins from York city centre. Open year round.

About Pool Bridge Farm

Pool Bridge Farm sits just ten minutes from York's historic centre, yet feels a world away – a peaceful retreat built around four pristine lakes that draw wild swimmers, paddleboarders and kayakers year-round. The water is beautifully maintained, complemented by spotless changing rooms, hot showers and well-kept saunas that make even winter dips feel achievable. Between swims, the on-site café serves excellent cakes and hearty food, and the friendly staff keep the whole operation running smoothly.

Pitches are straightforward and the atmosphere relaxed rather than resort-like, but that's entirely the point: this is a place to unwind, take a morning dip, then explore York's sights knowing you've got somewhere genuinely restorative to return to. Dogs are welcome, facilities stay open all year, and prices remain refreshingly reasonable for what you get.

Easy to find with good parking. I booked an “NHS discount ticket” assuming Blue Light Card would be accepted, but on arrival they required a physical NHS ID badge. This wasn’t clearly stated on the website, so it caused a slightly awkward moment at the ticket desk. However, they were still kind and allowed us entry. The area itself is very beautiful, with peaceful lakes and a relaxing atmosphere. It was lovely in the spring sunshine, with birdsong and a calm setting. The water was very cold at first, but refreshing once you acclimatised. We had a wander around the lakes, though two of the lakes near the saunas were fenced off with caution tape, so we stayed around the other lake instead. There was also quite a bit of animal mess on the gravel in some seating areas, which took away slightly from the experience.

The staff were so welcoming and helpful. The cafe had lovely food. It’s such a peaceful place and was much bigger than I expected. There’s something for everyone. I loved Monet Lake as it was adults only and was so quiet. It was lovely to relax and listen to the bird song. Definitely want to go back!

Visited during the week, so the weekend may be a little different. Camped overnight and had a sauna experience. The camping area: Perfectly flat and you can, basically, pitch anywhere. I came on a Tuesday and when I entered the field I thought I'd gone in the wrong one.. very spacious with only a few campers. Lovely facilities. Hot water wash up area, showers (spotless) and toilets. This seems to be a new unit and it has everything you need. This part is only open to the campers. Fire pits can be found around the site, which you just collect, buy some wood and use. Wi-fi... It mentions on their site that it is poor. I think that they may mean their own wi-fi, as I was easily able to get 80mb download sat in my campervan in their field. The Sauna: Fantastic... I'm definitely coming again this month (booked already). A number of saunas to use but it would appear that the use of each one is staggered. Check this out when you book, as not all are available. In between sauna sessions you come out of the door and walk down wooden steps into a beautiful lake solely for the use of the sauna users. The Lakes: Stunning.... And 16.6 degrees when I was there (mid June). There's loads of pictures from many other reviewers and I've added a few more. I think it's hard to take a bad photo at this place. I'm going to swim in the Monet Lake this morning, amongst the lilly pads. Staff: All seemed very welcoming, helpful and happy. It comes across that they enjoy working here. In summary: Just go, you'll love it!!!!!
