Gillygate Guest House occupies a small townhouse on Gillygate itself, one of the streets leading straight into the heart of York, with just six rooms giving it the feel of a proper guest house rather than a hotel. The setting is central and historic, with York Minster and the city walls both within easy reach on foot, and bus links nearby for getting further afield.
Rooms are kept clean and comfortable, with cozy beds and en-suite bathrooms, and family rooms are available for those travelling with children. Breakfast is served each morning, and guests can also make use of free WiFi, drinks in the room, outdoor seating and luggage storage, with 24 hour reception on hand throughout the stay. Free on-site parking is a genuine bonus in a city where parking can otherwise be a headache.
The owners are known for being friendly and helpful, happy to point guests towards the pubs, bars, restaurants and other eateries that sit close by. Being on a central street does mean some rooms can pick up traffic noise, so light sleepers may want to bear that in mind. For location and value within walking distance of York's main sights, it remains a solid, well-run base.

Stayed for a two night break in York and had the best sleep both nights. Room lovely and clean, en suite roomy with large shower cubicle. Host exceptionally helpful and friendly. Will definitely come again. Can highly recommend.

Good location for the Minster and inner city walls.Room very good looking out on the main road.Breakfast excellent asking first what you wanted came with tea or coffee. I found the stairs hard to get up because there was only one banister .

Brilliant stay at this guest house. Cheap with parking and great communication from the owners. Check in is from 2 but we could park from 11 - the owners guided us into the car park which you have to be blocked into but this wasn’t an issue for us due to walking everywhere. Lovely pub across from the guest house & a track next door. The rooms are comfortable, nice and warm with comfy beds. TV was a little small but bar that for the price it’s great. Thank you for a nice stay x
