Superb. A friend of mine recommended the Royal Oak and it didn’t disappoint. I walked in without a reservation, got a nice table for one. Looked at the menu and I thought I’d treat myself to a lovely steak. The server was friendly and helpful, not overbearing. Really smooth and easy order and paying. The steak was cooked to my request (medium) and it was perfect. Best cooked steak I’ve had in ages. The mushrooms and skin on chips were magnificent too. Love whole cooked button mushrooms when they are cooked well. Atmosphere was nice. A family sat in one corner and others coming and going. Really relaxing and welcoming. Thank you, was a really top notch meal.

Fantastic experience! Visited for a family dinner on a Monday eve. The set menu is great and has a wonderful selection of dishes. Everything arrived quickly, everything was home cooked. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Excellent experience. I highly recommend the apple and blackberry crumble, it's got like a brulee type top on it which is just incredible.

I stopped by the Royal Oak to get a glass of Chardonnay and a small bite. I’m alone in York for two weeks and like to find friendly places where I can get a coffee or a drink, some inexpensive home-cooked food, and read. I sat in the lounge area, which is cozy, and enjoyed a large glass of very decent Chardonnay and a bowl of beef barley and mushroom soup, all for about 15 pounds. I felt comfortable and well looked after, being alone and reading a book. It wasn’t too loud. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an authentic, comfortable pub experience in York.

We've always enjoyed coming in here for a couple of glasses of wine on an evening. It's cosy and warm (not alot of pubs are) and is steeped in York history. The only negative I can say is that the toilets are upstairs and as far as I'm aware are not disability accessible. But this is more due im guessing to it being an incredibly old building and therefore very difficult to adapt / change.
