The Guy Fawkes Inn stands at 25 High Petergate, directly beside York Minster, on the site where Guido Fawkes was born in 1570; he was baptised across the road at St Michael le Belfrey. The buildings are Grade I and Grade II listed and have been left deliberately dark and atmospheric, with timber beams, panelled walls, open log fires and working gas lighting rather than electric bulbs in the bar.
There are thirteen en-suite bedrooms above and behind the pub, plus a separate cottage in the courtyard. They are traditional in style, with dark wood furniture, heavy fabrics and, in several cases, four-poster beds. All have televisions, tea and coffee facilities and free wi-fi. Rooms facing High Petergate have Minster views but also street noise; the courtyard rooms are quieter.
The restaurant serves straightforward pub food from local suppliers, including Yorkshire beef and a Sunday roast, and the bar keeps a rotating selection of real ales alongside the usual draught. Breakfast is included in most rates and cooked to order. The courtyard, lit by gas lamps in the evening, is a pleasant place for a drink and is one of the reasons the pub is busy with non-residents.
The main draw is standing next to the Minster: it is around thirty seconds from the front door, and the Shambles, Bootham Bar and the city walls are all within five minutes. It suits couples and pairs of friends on a short break who want somewhere with genuine history and are happy with an inn rather than a hotel. There is no parking, no lift and no spa, and the pub below can be lively until closing.

What guests say
We've stayed here around 6 or 7 times, and will continue to as long as they have a room available when we visit, which is usually every 8 to 10 weeks, we just love York. Staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are quirky and comfortable. The food is amazing. It does get busy at times in the bar and outdoor areas. If you're visiting York, the Guy Fawkes Inn is a perfect location. Step out of the door, turn left and there's the minster.

I wanted to love this place. It's a historic building in an incredible location beside York Minster, but the restaurant experience was a major disappointment. The service model is impersonal and rushed. Wait staff is overwhelmed. We waited about 45 minutes for our food, and when it finally arrived, part of our order was missing. No follow up. I asked that they bring missing item. It never came. The food itself was mediocre and nowhere near worth the wait. We ended up having to sit outside on a crooked patio table, which wasn't what we wanted on holiday. It felt more like a tourist trap than a quality dining experience. York deserves better. I'd recommend eating somewhere else.

So this is a fabulous pub. Great food and friendly service. But on arrival we were told how ‘lucky we were’ to be able to have a bedroom in the new renovated building rather than the room we had booked. We went along with it. The new rooms are beautiful but very small and cramped with no where to put a suitcase and our bed was tiny. I had a terrible nights sleep 😔 Beautifully done but I won’t be staying the night there again. Go and eat in the back garden area.

Absolutely unreal. The Guy Fawkes steak and ale pie is hands down the best pie I have ever eaten. Proper rich, slow cooked steak that melts in your mouth, and a deep, full bodied ale gravy that is packed with flavour without being heavy or greasy. The pastry is next level. Golden, crisp, and perfectly baked with just the right amount of bite. Everything about it feels homemade and done properly, not rushed or mass produced. If you are even slightly considering it, just order it. You will not find a better steak and ale pie.
