Couples and small families will find The Monaltrie works well for a few days exploring Deeside and the Cairngorms. This ground-floor apartment sits within a converted coaching inn in Ballater village, a short walk from shops, tearooms and restaurants. The building's original features—high ceilings and bay windows—remain; the living room opens directly onto manicured lawns that slope down to the River Dee, which runs at the garden's edge.

Layout is straightforward: a living room with sofa bed and Smart TV (including Netflix), a kitchen with electric oven, hob, dishwasher and washing machine, one bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuite shower, and a second bedroom with two single beds served by a family bathroom. Heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included. There is private parking for one car on site.

The village itself draws walkers and golfers; the River Dee offers leisurely bank-side routes. Lochnagar, the mountain that inspired Lord Byron and a children's book by Prince Charles, lies within reach for those with hiking ambitions. Royal Lochnagar Distillery sits nearby. No smoking indoors; a travel cot and highchair are available on request.
