About The Ambleside Inn
The Ambleside Inn is a sizeable, traditional-style inn holding 30 rooms right on Market Place, in the heart of Ambleside. Its character leans on classic pub charm rather than modern minimalism, with a bar and restaurant forming the social heart of the building and a cosy, welcoming feel throughout.
Rooms are en-suite with drinks available in room, free WiFi, and breakfast included, catering for both simple overnight stays and longer breaks, with prices spanning a wide range depending on room and season. The restaurant is a particular draw, known for generous helpings of pub classics such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and Sunday roasts, backed by a good range of beers. Kids' meals are available, and the inn welcomes dogs, making it a practical base for families and pet owners alike. Staff are consistently described as friendly and attentive, though service can be slow at busier times.
Beyond the front door, Ambleside offers walking and cycling country on the doorstep, along with fishing and watersports nearby thanks to the proximity of Lake Windermere. Further pubs, restaurants, and entertainment options sit within easy reach, and an electric vehicle charge point is available on site for those touring the Lakes by car.

What guests say
The food was excellent, with a good choice on the menu and generous portions. Everything arrived quickly and was cooked perfectly. The drinks selection was equally impressive, with plenty of local beers and a well-stocked bar. What really made the visit stand out was the staff. Despite being busy, everyone was friendly, efficient, and genuinely welcoming. Nothing felt like too much trouble, and we were looked after from start to finish.

We booked a table for 20 people several weeks in advance specifically for Sunday dinner to celebrate my grandma's birthday. We were even told to arrive at 4:30pm for Sunday lunch, so we cut the rest of our day short to make sure we were there on time. When we arrived, we were told they weren't serving any Sunday dinners at all. This completely defeated the purpose of our booking. The restaurant claimed they had tried to call me at 6pm the evening before, but because I missed one call, they seemed to think it was somehow our fault. For a booking of 20 people made weeks in advance, I would have expected more effort to contact us, such as leaving a voicemail, sending a text, or emailing us. To make matters worse, there were another four menu items unavailable as well, leaving us with very limited choices. We had planned this meal for weeks as part of my grandma's birthday weekend, and instead it ended up being a huge disappointment. I understand that stock issues and unexpected problems can happen, but the communication and customer service were extremely poor. When a large group books well in advance for a specific meal, it's reasonable to expect the restaurant to honour the booking or, at the very least, make every effort to ensure customers are aware of significant changes before they arrive. Sadly, what should have been a special family celebration was overshadowed by poor organisation and a lack of communication.

Fantastic food, prawn linguine with chilli and Parmesan was delicious. Warren the chef couldn’t do more to adjust my meal to make it extra spicy. Fantastic service from amelia for discussing with the chefs my meal adaptions. Thanks to all the staff☺️ 10/10

My partner and I only visited the pub, and did not stay at the inn. The pub is open for meals till late, which was great as we walked in for dinner at around 8pm! Feel free to just walk right in and grab a table, as you gotta order straight at the bar. No frills pub and you can grab yourself some iced water on the side. We had the potato and bacon chowder, as well as the steak and ale pie. Both were delicious and it was more than enough for the both of us (we shared). My partner had pint of Raven Red and he quite enjoyed it. Would recommend!

Diners like this inn's delicious and generous portions of food, including fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and Sunday roasts, as well as its wide selection of beers. They also highlight the friendly and attentive staff, cozy atmosphere, and dog-friendly policy.
Some reviews mention the service can be inefficient.
