What visitors say
Fabulous little find, not sure why I haven't been before. A wide range of things to look at in this compact museum, from 2nd world war to old maps and history of the area; to more detail about the Jacobite History; to information about a lady from near Evanton (can't remember her name); to natural history- a great golden eagle; to information about almost modern history including hat pins; porridge spindle and other kitchen utensils. We were there about 45 -60 mins, some lovely helpful volunteers. Very good use of space and great little gift shop.

This museum was a very pleasant surprise. It is much richer and more interesting than I expected, with a wide variety of exhibits that make it well worth a visit. There is clearly a lot of passion behind the collection and the way it is presented. What stood out even more was the warm welcome from the people who run the museum. They were friendly, enthusiastic, and happy to share information, making the visit feel personal and enjoyable. If you are in the Fort William area, I would definitely recommend stopping by. It may not be the most famous museum you'll visit, but it is full of interesting exhibits and deserves far more attention than it probably gets

An inconspicuous proposition opens into a Tardis of history, geology, and culture that spreads beyond it's Highland orientation. The museum did not charge for entry at time of writing, and exhibitions extended to three floors with those interested in everything from fashion to military, history to geology, pre-history and culture. Some exhibits are important enough to justify a place in any museum. West Highland Museum is surely one of Fort William's best secrets, and we worth a charitable contribution in lieu of a ticket.
