About OYO Gullivers

New Steine sits just back from Brighton's seafront, a square of Georgian townhouses within easy reach of the beach and the busier streets of the city centre. OYO Gullivers occupies one of these period buildings, giving it plenty of character even if the surroundings inside are kept simple rather than smart.

There are 12 rooms, all fairly basic in style, with free Wi-Fi throughout and drinks available in the room. Breakfast is served on site, and the property has its own restaurant offering French dining, alongside luggage storage for those arriving early or leaving late. It's a straightforward base rather than a place built around extra comforts.

Outside, Brighton's usual mix of pubs, restaurants and eateries are close by, along with watersports and walking areas near the seafront, and golf and fishing further afield for those wanting to venture out. It suits guests who want a central, no-frills spot to sleep and explore the city from, rather than a destination in itself.

We arrived and walked straight in. The front door didn’t seem to lock. The reception room had a pile of plasterboard stacked against the wall and no member of staff on duty. The double bed was two single beds pushed together with a double mattress on top so there was a run down each side of the bed sticking out past the mattress. I was disappointed as the room I had didn’t look like the photos I saw on the website. The website rooms looked clean and fresh. Our was very run down. The bed had however clearly was freshly made and the bathroom was clean also. I appreciate that Brighton is a relatively expensive place to stay but I paid £125 for the room and I feel it would have been overpriced at half the price. I wouldn’t stay in the hotel again.

Do not stay here. We paid far too much money for this place that looks nothing like the images online. The place was dirty. There were alcohol cans left all over the entrance communal area where my 18month old daughter picked up a beer can. No staff or reception in sight. The room was dirty - a mosquito squatted on wall, the room didn’t appear to have been cleaned. Towels were left on bathroom floor and one of them had dirty marks all over it so we couldn’t use it. No staff to report this to, to get a replacement. During the evening around 10pm we could hear another couple staying there complaining about their dirty room as they must have called someone to come to the hotel. They were saying they refused to stay there and wanted their money back. The worker refused to offer money back or get a manager and tried to show them to a new room which sounded like it was just as bad as the complaints continued. The manager was eventually called later after it had escalated getting louder and louder until the police were called. It shows many other rooms were poor condition like ours. To top it off, extremely loud music came on around 9pm. It seemed to be a shop owner playing a speaker from his entrance. This went on for several hours so we barely got any sleep. The area although close to things, seemed to be in a bit of a dodgy area of town, with lots of people slumped in the corners or doing drugs in the green square area in front of the hotel. Genuinely felt quite unsafe staying here. My mum was staying in a separate room on the top floor and I was worried for her safety. I would not stay here again and definitely would not recommend it.

I was disappointed as it had been rated a 4 star, I spent more to have the deluxe double room and I was looking forward to a much needed break away for 2 nights. I would say it was very average. Booking in took a long time as staff were down the road at the sister hotel. I had to ring twice and go off for a coffee and come back. The room was tired and would benefit hugely from being painted and refurbished. As others have commented the toilet did smell, so maybe the buildings sewage needs looking at. One lamp didn't work, it wasn't easy to find the kettle, it was in the bottom drawer, I had to phone, and the chair by the table under the window was pretty wobbly. The staff were friendly enough when I could locate them and the breakfast was good. But definitely not 4 star accommodation.

Location is near Brighton Pier. The toilet needs improvement in cleanliness. No one in the front desk, no lock on the main door. One of the rooms still got used plastic nails from previous customer, toilet only has a dim light and no light inside the shower room. Room blinds were too dusty. Despite those the bed is comfortable, the sheets were clean.
