About Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel
Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel occupies a substantial three-storey building on New Dover Road, surrounded by two acres of its own gardens on the edge of Canterbury. It's a traditional-feeling hotel with 43 rooms, offering a quieter, greener setting than the city centre while still keeping you within walking distance of it.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and free WiFi, and family and accessible rooms are available; some rooms do show their age, though the comfort and upkeep are generally well regarded. Facilities extend to a restaurant and bar, lift access, room service, laundry service and free on-site parking, plus meeting rooms and a bridal suite for events and weddings. Breakfast is a particular strength, with a wide buffet spread that includes vegetarian options, and the staff are consistently described as attentive and helpful.
The gardens and outdoor seating make the grounds a pleasant place to sit, while Canterbury's cathedral and historic city walls are an easy walk away, alongside pubs, restaurants and other attractions nearby. Pets are welcome, and golf, fishing and horse riding can all be found in the surrounding area.
What guests say
The hotel is well located, has good facilities and every member of staff we encountered was very professional and friendly. However, the room was very disappointing. The hotel proudly advertises that they have air conditioned rooms in their responses to reviews, so knowing the weather was likely to be warm, we treated ourselves by booking the most expensive room in the hotel thinking it would be one of those with air conditioning. We were wrong! It was, and remained stiflingly hot inside the room where a small desk fan had been provided to replace the main ventilation system that was not working. We discovered from the receptionist that ours was the only room, of its type without air conditioning so basically we were just unlucky to have been allocated an inferior room. The hotel had left a note in the room explaining the mitigation measures (fan, etc) that was signed “warmest regards”. I suggest that someone needs to use their words more carefully! Needless to say, sleeping was very difficult and we were relieved to leave the hotel in the morning, feeling tired and very short-changed (we paid over £250 for the night). As the receptionist agreed, we were just unlucky and I had made an expensive mistake not to confirm the availability of aircon. Unfortunately, we had to drive home to North Wales following 2 or 3 hours sleep in a very uncomfortable room. We frequently visit Kent but will probably only consider this hotel in the winter - just in case!

My wife and I have been staying at this hotel for the last four nights. We found it to be excellent value. Very friendly staff. The room was clean and well equipped. The location is fantastic. The next time I am staying in Canterbury, I will not look elsewhere. I suppose I should give a negative, but I am scrapping the barrel. The bland jazz style music in the communal areas was a bit annoying. Sometimes you just need peace and quiet. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Great hotel and a stone throw from Canterbury city centre, very clean and lovely staff. The only down side was no air conditioning which would have been great while we were there during the heat wave,a fan was supplied but didn't really help much. The bed was very comfortable and room was superb decor wise.

Beautiful old building, however we were in the newer wing. Quite modern, funky decor. Room was large with view of the garden. Comfortable bed. Nice shower with bath( but didn't have time to try bath) Lovely, helpful, attentive staff. We informed them that we were leaving our dog in room ( as we couldn't find a restaurant that allowed them) They checked on her and as she was fretful, took her down to reception and kept her with them for company... They sent us a voicemail to let us know too, which was very reassuring. Paid an extra £20 for breakfast. Which had a good selection. Coffee machine was on the blink though and no vegetarian sausages or similar for the hot breakfast. However the mushrooms were delicious 😋 The lift , however, was very old and dated . Covered in carpet and brown stained fake paneling. But it was very jolty and quite scary,as it appeared to drop slightly when you reached the next floor...🥺 There was a box full of card and board games in the bar area. And we did try a couple of them, when we returned from town and had a few drinks.... It is a long walk into town, but straight and easy to find. Just turn left out of the gate and keep walking....
