About The Canterbury Hotel and Apartments
Formerly trading as the Ebury, this privately owned hotel occupies a Victorian townhouse and a group of cottages set in two acres of grounds on New Dover Road, roughly fifteen minutes' walk from the cathedral. It is the sort of independent hotel that has largely disappeared from British cities: family scale, a little old-fashioned in the best sense, and with genuine gardens rather than a strip of decking.
There are around fifteen en-suite bedrooms in the main house, all with wi-fi and the usual amenities, plus serviced apartments and eight purpose-built self-catering cottages in the grounds, each with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate kitchen. That mix makes it unusually flexible for families, longer stays and anyone who would rather cook than eat out every night. An indoor heated swimming pool is a real rarity at this price in Canterbury.
The reason to choose New Dover Road over the walled city is practical: free parking on site, more space for the money and a quieter night. The walk into town takes you past the Kent county cricket ground at the St Lawrence, and Canterbury East station and Canterbury Christ Church University are both close. Cooked English breakfasts and bar meals are served on the premises.

Just checked out from a one night's stay in one of the cottages. Can't praise it highly enough. Staff are very friendly and helpful. About a 15 minute stroll from the centre. We stayed in cottage no.10 and it was lovely, spotless. We didn't have a patio in this cottage but the hotel garden is beautiful to sit in and also has a shaded area with two hot tubs. Everything you need in the cottage and a lovely powerful shower with shower gel provided. Two bedrooms, double and a twin. Breakfast was great, they provide Richmond vegan sausages if you don't eat meat and cooked fried eggs to order. Would definitely stay here again.

We've stayed twice now in the cottages, number 3 and number 10. They were both excellent in terms of function, value for money, and they were well stocked with the supplies we needed. Few minor niggles like the light bulbs not working in the cooker extractor fans, and we needed to swap out the salt and pepper shakers which had been emptied. It helps if visitors report things, of course! The hot tub was just great. The trade off to being under a majestic conifer is that wind blows down needles and some leaves during colder months, but then being part of nature is more valuable to us and we loved the experience. Overall, the best thing about the stays though was the staff. Welcoming gentle, calm and in control, and with a "can do" attitude made us instantly relax. We look forward to our return.

Stayed in the hotel which had dated 80s decor and in need of modernisation. Originally offered a room without shower but the owner changed with a little persuasion. The en suite we got in exchange was comically small which meant it was not possible to sit on straight nor open the door. Rooms don't have AC and there was not a fan (though suspect we could have got one if asked). On the positives, it was clean, staff were pleasant, shower was good and breakfast also had plenty of options. Finally, need to mention the price of £145 for a small double which was well overpriced for what it is. However, Canterbury in general seems expensive.

Love this little place. Breakfast was lovely. Room large and comfortable. Doesn't have a lift if you need to lugg baggage upstairs. Staff are friendly.
