About Canterbury Cathedral Lodge

Cathedral Lodge is the one property in Canterbury with an address inside the World Heritage Site itself. It stands in the Precincts, on the cathedral's own land, and the practical consequence is a stay unlike any other in the city: you walk out of your room into a floodlit close after the gates have shut and the day visitors have gone. Several of the 35 bedrooms look directly onto the cathedral, and those views are the reason to book.

The building is modern rather than historic, which surprises some guests, and the rooms are correspondingly straightforward - bright, well proportioned, en suite, with smart televisions and free wi-fi. It is run by the cathedral as part of its conference and hospitality operation, so the atmosphere is calm and slightly institutional rather than boutique. Rates typically include a full English breakfast and entry to the cathedral, which adds up to a meaningful saving over two days.

Practicalities worth knowing: vehicle access to the Precincts is restricted, so you will be sent instructions rather than pointed at a car park, and the gates close in the evening, which means late arrivals need to plan. In exchange you get a private garden, complete quiet at night, and the shortest possible walk to the single best thing in the city.

Perfect location; I sat in my room window seat and looked out on the cathedral, lovely outside garden sitting area also looked out on the cathedral. Breakfast was delicious and lovely wait staff. Hotel reception ladies were so friendly and helpful. Room was small but who cares when there are other areas. Getting there was a bit of a challenge with Sat Nav putting us crook

We're not religious, but we love staying at the lodge and have stayed there 3 or 4 times over the last 3 years. The staff are lovely, the rooms are clean and comfortable (set out Premier Inn style) and you have a great choice on offer for breakfast. Included in the stay is entry to the Cathedral and you get a discount in the gift shop and some local restaurants. Our room had a wonderful view of the Cathedral.

My sister held her wedding reception there. The hotel is in a perfect location, within the courtyard grounds of Canterbury Cathedral. We had drinks on the hotel lawn with the Cathedral immediately behind us. I don't think I have had such a lovely backdrop in a city before. It was a very hot day but there was plenty of trees and shade. The dinner we had that evening was excellent and later we had drinks in the little courtyard next to the dining room. My family stayed the night. We had a Cathedral view room. The room was clean and well decorated and the bed comfortable. It is very quiet around there so we could have the windows open. The next day we were able to enjoy the view of the Cathedral and the pretty hotel garden from our bed. (The path was a long way from our window so we couldn't be seen - I hope) The breakfast was very good. All freshly served at your table (in the courtyard), not a buffet, which I much prefer. Everything you could want, including freshly squeezed orange juice, full English breakfasts (the black pudding was especially good) and other lighter options like Eggs Royale. (They know how to make good poached eggs). You could have any continental option as well as the cooked breakfast, including pastries. All the staff were very friendly and professional. The next day we had free entry to the Cathedral and we enjoyed looking around there, (it is a magnificent building) and around historic Canterbury On our return to the car there was another wedding reception about to take place. That would be my only concern. If I was a regular guest, who visited when there was a wedding reception, what bar and dining facilities would be available to me.

Amazing location in cathedral precincts providing a quiet escape from the busy city outside the cathedral walls. Great breakfast, afternoon cafe, outdoor garden for eating, having a drink, or taking in the view. Simple but charming rooms, friendly staff. Will return!
