About Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoon

Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoon occupies a building on Burgate, in the heart of Canterbury, close to the city's historic landmarks and transport links. It's a straightforward, no-frills hotel that pairs the familiar Wetherspoon pub-and-bar setup with rooms upstairs for an overnight stay.

Rooms are en-suite and come with air conditioning, with family and accessible options available and some enjoying good views over the surrounding streets. Beds and showers are a strong point, and the rooms are generally kept clean and well-presented. Downstairs, the restaurant and bar serve breakfast and meals throughout the day, including kids' options, with food that's good value and served promptly by attentive staff. Free WiFi and outdoor seating are also on offer. One point worth noting is that ID checks at check-in aren't always applied consistently.

The location puts guests within reach of Canterbury's pubs, restaurants and entertainment, with golf and fishing also available nearby for those wanting to venture further afield. It suits travellers after an affordable base in the city centre rather than a luxury stay.

Our friend who’s Italian and 26 years of age had a valid form of Italian ID. This ID has been used in multiple locations and everyone’s accepted us. My friend didn’t carry around her passport for this exact reason. Our ID had already been checked and everything was okay. Then this other lady comes and asks us again we say we’ve already been checked and offer up our IDs again. She then says that it’s policy and can’t be accepted because it’s not a driving licence or a passport. She then tells us she can’t serve us FOOD because there is no “valid form of ID”. Our friend is upset and was very hungry. She gets given a recipe for a refund and not even offered her food to go. The lady leaves and tells us we will get our food as a takeaway. Then we search up the so called Wetherspoons policy that we’ve been told about and on the Wetherspoons website itself, it says that Identification cards from other countries are accepted and a valid form of ID. My friend even tried to speak to another member of staff but this same lady jumped right in and said “I’ve already told you this” you need to leave. We are applaud by this type of behaviour and it isn’t the first time this has happened to me or my friends in this Wetherspoons. The staff need to know their policies and what they’re talking about before ruining someone’s day, who just wanted to eat some food.d

Wouldn't recommend eating here if you're alone, especially if you're a young woman. Had a really weird and uncomfortable experience. It was quite busy and there weren't smaller tables available as the staff had reserved a whole area of the pub. After walking around for a bit, I found a booth in a quieter corner. There were other empty tables and even the bar style seats had 4 chairs around them. I sat down and had just found what I wanted to order, then an older man, who was a complete stranger, thought it was appropriate to try and sit in the booth with me. Who does that? Is this a pub thing I'm missing? I don't go to a busy restaurant and just pull up a chair alongside a couple trying to enjoy their meal. I'm not very comfortable talking to strangers, and just wanted to be left alone and have some lunch. Thankfully I hadn't paid for what I wanted to order on the app yet, so since he acted completely oblivious to how uncomfortable I was that he was going to just sit opposite me, I quickly grabbed my stuff and left. It was mid-week and lunchtime, so it's not like it was evening when you might expect things to be rowdier or lots of drunk people. I think I will support some of the independent cafes around Canterbury instead.

I didn’t know staff make up their own rules. Pls get your staff trained properly. There were three of us, yet the waitress couldn’t even follow basic ID-checking procedures. She failed to check all of our IDs before serving alcohol, happily gave drinks to two of us, and then suddenly refused to serve our other friend because she didn’t have her ID on her. Our friend then came back with valid ID, and was still refused service. To make things even more ridiculous, the waitress took away another friend’s drink, made us leave, only for the manager to say we cannot get a refund for the drink the waitress took (that was untouched), only to give it back and tell us we had five minutes to finish it. PATHETIC !!!!
