About Loch Ken Shepherd's Huts

Tucked away on a working farm fifteen minutes from Castle Douglas, this pocket-sized glamping retreat feels wonderfully remote. Two handcrafted shepherd's huts perch on the shores of Loch Ken, gazing out over Galloway Forest Park – and each one is kitted out with a king-sized bed, potbelly stove for warmth and cooking, and a private bathroom with solar-heated shower. There's no electricity, which only deepens the escape: mornings are for lingering under crisp linen, watching the loch shimmer beyond the glass. Outside, your own decking comes with a firepit and barbecue, while the surrounding landscape delivers wild swimming, fishing, kayaking and forest trails in generous measure.

Thoughtful touches abound – Belfast sink, full crockery, tea and coffee, even a traditional clay pot for keeping things cool – and the nearest village shop is only five minutes' drive. An award-winning pub-restaurant sits equally close if you'd rather not self-cater. Perfect for those truly ready to unplug.

We had a great time at the shepherd's hut. This truly is a "get away from it all" experience. I would call it "glamping" but with en suite toilet and shower and almost full kitchen facilities, that doesn't really capture it. Surrounded by beautiful countryside including dry stone walls and green fields, with a 5 minute walk to Loch Ken. Also a short drive to the local village with its wonderful pub. Debbie was incredibly helpful and the hut is set up well so you have everything you need right there.

Wow, what can I say? The views from this Hut are just something else. The Shepherds hut itself is just perfect. A massive thank you to Debbie and Jamie for their hospitality. Genuinely would recommend. Thanks guys, Ricky & Tom

The hut is amazing, there is a little fireplace giving cozy warmth in the evenings, there is a bbq and log burner and wood is provided on arrival, if you run out you have to get it yourself from the loch shore but at least it’s free 😁. Everything is run on gas instead of electricity apart of lights that are powered by solar screen, you get two usb plugs and the lighter plug, it would be amazing if there would be at least one normal electric plug to be able to use non usb charged things. Also a couple shrubs behind the hut could be useful as it’s a quite windy and bare hill. Visitors pack wind breaks. It’s not a complain it’s a proposition of improvement but I understand the off grid thing at the same time. Recommended food places have been closed and seemed abandoned, we had to look for other places. Sheep were amazing neighbours, birds can be heard at all times, it was great just be outside, see the landscape and enjoy the nature. Hut is easily commutable to other places around and there is lots of activities in close proximity. Unfortunately it was cloudy so we couldn’t see stars this time. But we will come back and try again!

We recently enjoyed a one-night stay that was truly cozy with amazing views. The warm welcome by the owner, who kindly showed us around, added a special touch to the experience.
