About The Compasses

A pool table in the bar sets the tone at The Compasses, a straightforward pub-hotel in central Chelmsford, Essex. This is a laid-back sort of place rather than a polished one, with simple en-suite rooms that give guests somewhere comfortable and unfussy to rest rather than a design statement.

Downstairs, the restaurant and bar serve as the heart of the place, with breakfast included and drinks available to take up to your room if you'd rather not linger. There's a garden and covered outdoor seating area for warmer evenings, free WiFi throughout, and 24 hour reception for whenever you arrive. Free on-site parking is provided, and pets are welcome, making it an easy stop for those travelling with a dog.

Chelmsford's own pubs, bars and restaurants are close by if you fancy a change of scene, and the surrounding area suits walkers and cyclists, with golf and fishing also on hand nearby. It's a no-frills base for exploring the town and its transport links, with good parking and a proper pub at the centre of it.

Nice selection of drinks. However, the lady that works there with the tattoos up her arm was screaming and swearing at some customers kicking them out shouting “this is my pub” so I imagine is the landlord. She was heavily intoxicated whilst serving behind the bar. Very offputting. Safe to say we made a swift exit.

Really disappointed with the service at this pub. I went for lunch with my family on a Sunday. We couldn't order the roast that was advertised very big on the blackboard near entrance. It has to be pre-booked apparently. We decided to ordered from the menu but the guy from the bar said that half of what's on the menu is not available. So we left to choose from 4 options. After ordering whatever was available it took more than 1 hour to have fish and chips served (and a tablespoon of peas floating in tiny bowl half full of water - disgusting) pub was mostly empty, duhh. It is unbelievable how bad the food and service was in this place.

So grateful to have this pub within walking distance, so a much welcome new local for us. Staff are super friendly and we really appreciate the table service - very attentive. Dog friendly too, so big thumbs up from us. Thank you for the team that have taken this over and hope in return, the locals use you regularly.

Fantastic roast dinner, such an amazing refurb & such top quality food. I would say the price is well worth it. Great service, attentive staff. Nice selection of good food & drinks. I am so happy we now have such a quality local pub in the area. The old Compasses pub was a total dive - don’t be put off by the name being the same or the old pics still on google maps as it has completely changed!
