A small, characterful four-room inn on Victoria Road in Chelmsford, prized for its quirky decor and riverside beer garden.

About The Riverside Inn

The Riverside Inn is a compact, characterful inn on Victoria Road in Chelmsford, with just four rooms giving it the feel of a small, personal establishment rather than a standard hotel. Each room has its own distinct, quirky decor, comfortable beds, air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom, along with free WiFi and drinks available in the room. Some rooms can pick up noise from elsewhere in the building, worth bearing in mind if you're a light sleeper.

Downstairs there's a restaurant serving generous food including kids' meals, plus a well-stocked bar. Guests also have use of a gym and an on-site spa and sauna, and 24 hour reception means arrival times are flexible. The garden running down to the river is one of the inn's real draws, a quiet spot for a drink away from the town centre bustle, and the staff are noted for being helpful and easy to deal with.

The location on Victoria Road puts you close to Chelmsford's own attractions, with pubs, bars and restaurants nearby for evenings out, and cycling routes, golf and fishing all within reach for guests wanting to get outdoors. Adults-only accommodation, luggage storage and breakfast round out the practical offering.

We love coming here and staying to visit family. Ruby and the team are amazing, nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are clean and quirky, we love rooms 1, 3 and 4. The location is perfect and the beer garden is glorious in the summer. We can't wait to come down and stay at the Riverside soon! ❤️

A nice room that did not sacrifice comfort for tradition: nestled up in the roof the room could have been cramped and hot, but careful layout and a good air-conditioner made for a restful night. Excellent coffee facilities. Very comfortable bed, homely furniture with a sofa and drawers that double as a desk as well. Staff very affable and accommodating; Ruby kindly found me a spare phone charger without which I would have had to venture out to buy a spare---thank you! Also a decent pint of beer, which is sadly not too common in British pubs these days---and a lovely riverside table on which to enjoy it! A much more memorable experience than the hotel chains. I hope to return.

All around a really nice pub however, the toilets are disgusting. They are always filthy and smell even when the pub isn’t actually busy. They definitely need someone to keep on top of cleaning them.

The hotel is okay. The rooms have some charm and the staff are nice. You are greeted to the hotel by a bathroom that stinks of stale urine and you also need to pass the bathrooms every time you enter the property to get to your room and exiting which is revolting. If you need an early night sleep do not stay here as the music from the pub downstairs is extremely loud and you will not sleep. Facilities were basic. Extremely thin mattress, no remote for the television and the room and no remote for the tv so we could not use it.
