About Alexander House And Utopia Spa

Turners Hill, on the edge of East Grinstead, sits deep in West Sussex countryside, and Alexander House And Utopia Spa makes the most of that setting with gardens and outdoor seating overlooking the surrounding grounds. It's a substantial hotel with 58 rooms, built as a wedding venue and country retreat as much as a place to stay, complete with a bridal suite for those marrying on-site.

Rooms are air-conditioned and en-suite, with family and accessible options available, and each comes with drinks provided. The restaurant is a particular strength, with the omelettes and afternoon tea singled out as highlights, alongside a bar and kids' menu for families. Beyond the room, there's an indoor swimming pool, gym, and the Utopia Spa itself, though the spa facilities don't always match the rest of the hotel for upkeep and are worth checking on before you book a treatment.

Staff are consistently attentive, and the rooms themselves are spacious and well looked after. Free on-site parking and an EV charging point cover practical needs, while a golf course, pubs and restaurants nearby give guests reasons to venture beyond the grounds. Pets are welcome, and porter and concierge services are on hand throughout the stay.

Expensive but it was a nice break. Plenty of relaxation time in the spa, it has a reasonable selection of pools and spa rooms. If you don't choose the spa breaks, you can pay to use the pools for £20 per person, so that's what we did. Reflections restaurant was lovely with an beautiful central outside area, with olive trees and festoon lights. Service was excellent and so was the food. I would recommend the fillet steak! Our Garden suite was lovely, with plenty of space. It was clean and well presented. You can use an app to order food and view information. You do get a bit of road noise when in the garden, but it's otherwise pretty quiet and peaceful.

We booked the top package with dinner, breakfast, and spa access, spending nearly £900 for a very short 18-hour stay between flights, so we left feeling quite disappointed overall. The room was spacious and comfortable in size, but it had a strong old smell upon arrival. Unfortunately, some maintenance and housekeeping details also affected the experience. The hair dryer and one of the lamps were not working, and finding hair from a previous guest on the shower floor was honestly unacceptable and unpleasant. Service was mixed. Samuel was absolutely wonderful, always smiling, professional, and genuinely helpful. The bellmen were super kind and friendly. However, our experience at the front desk was much less welcoming. We politely asked if the hotel had an adapter available to charge our phones since we were only connecting through the UK for one night and did not purchase a UK adapter. While they eventually provided one, the attitude and tone from the front desk staff member made us feel like we were inconveniencing her simply for asking. A friendly response would have completely changed that interaction. Restaurant service was also extremely slow throughout dinner. It took a very long time for our wine to arrive, and we repeatedly waited extended periods just to place orders or request the check. That said, the filet mignon was absolutely outstanding and honestly one of the highlights of the stay. The cheese and wine platter was also very good. Some other dishes were less impressive, including a salad served without dressing and vegetables that lacked flavor, but the filet itself deserved five stars. The location is convenient for airport access, about 20 minutes away, which is why we chose the hotel. However, it is not walkable to restaurants or shops due to the busy roads nearby, so without a taxi or car, you are essentially limited to staying on property. The spa facilities themselves were beautiful and relaxing, but the biggest disappointment was the treatment package. Despite arriving around 5:30 PM and leaving at 8:00 AM the next morning, no treatments were available during our stay. Since the hotel already knew our reservation details and stay duration in advance, this should have been communicated or scheduled proactively before arrival. While the complimentary drinks offered as compensation were appreciated, they did not feel equivalent to the experience we had paid for. Overall, there were definitely some positive aspects, especially certain staff members, the spa facilities, and the filet mignon, but for the price paid and the level of package booked, the experience did not meet expectations.

This is not a 5 star hotel by any means. The entire place needs a renovation. I checked in for a quiet weekend at the end of a business trip. I wanted to have some relaxation, hiking and biking. When I first walked into my room (Malborough), it must have been over 40C. They didn’t start the AC before I got there and it took over 6 hours to drop down just a little. If I hadn’t closed the bathroom door, I’m not sure if would have ever gotten cool. Within minutes, I saw several spiders, including one crawling on the bed and in the tub. I killed them with my shoe. The windows were covered in cobwebs. The entire GoogleHome system never worked for me, therefore, I didn’t have direct access to many of the amenities. They don’t accept AMEX, so another pain. Food was overpriced. The continental breakfast left a lot to be desired for 18£. The fruit salad was definitely a day or two old and there wasn’t a lot of selection. Paying that much for cereal and some rotten fruit is a problem. The “bikes” they have to use are completely rusted and old. I borrowed one for about 40 min and it wasn’t until I was half down the club that I realized none of the gears actually worked. So that was terrible. There was mold in the shower. I did get a massage at the spa. The massage was the highlight along with the small wooded area for a hike. The rest of the spa just kind of grossed me out. The outside hot tub’s plaster is falling apart. There are hardly many seats outside and just overall not an award winning spa. All in all, kind of grossed out by the entire place a bit. I wish I would have read more of the reviews before booking. I would have spent the extra for Pennyhill.

Great location. Nice views locally. It has been a while since we last visited. We have been there a couple of times before. The reception staff are as unwelcoming as we remember them being. The gardens are less well kept than before, more overgrown, neglected. Screaming children at the rear of the building and squealing babies in the garden! A huge no go for us. The wooden accommodation building by the car park is heavily weathered. Furniture in the bar is worn and lost its structure. The bar was entirely empty but they still made a lot of noise and seemed unwilling to serve us. The wallpaper and art pieces are looking like they have significant wear and tear. The wallpaper is torn and damaged in places. A couple of nice staff were eclipses by the miserableness of the rest. I'm a bit sad about it as it was my birthday too (which they knew). Strongly suggest you seek alternatives.
