About Kildonan Lodge Hotel

Breakfast is the thing to know about Kildonan Lodge Hotel, cooked fresh to order each morning and reason enough on its own to linger before heading out. There's a bar on site too, along with a restaurant, so guests can eat and drink without straying far, while the garden offers a quiet spot to sit outside.

The hotel has 15 rooms, generally spacious, though a few reviewers have noted that maintenance can be patchy in places. Free WiFi, laundry service and luggage storage are all provided, and there's a small gym for anyone keen to keep up a routine while travelling. Meeting rooms are also available for those combining business with a stay in the city.

Set on Craigmillar Park, the hotel benefits from free on-site parking and good bus connections into central Edinburgh, making it a practical base whether arriving by car or relying on public transport. Nearby streets offer further pubs, restaurants and eateries, plus entertainment options, so there's plenty to explore beyond the hotel itself.

Good lovely hotel. Rooms are cleaned on regular basis and generally had a pleasant stay there. It’s all what you need if you’re visiting Edinburgh for a couple of days. Peaceful, nice and clean. Bus stop is right infront of the hotel and can get you to the city in ~20 min Feel like it could benefit from some decoration as the place gives the vibe of being in a care home! Otherwise, no complaints!

The Kildonan Lodge Hotel is a masterclass in classic Scottish charm. Its Victorian elegance, highlighted by a cozy lounge and roaring fireplace, creates an inviting "home away from home" atmosphere rarely found in city hotels. The hospitality is exceptionally warm, paired perfectly with locally sourced, hearty breakfasts. Its peaceful setting offers a tranquil escape, yet the city center is just a quick bus ride away. For anyone prioritizing historic character and genuine service over sterile modernism, this is a must-stay in Edinburgh.

We booked Kildonan Lodge based on its location and the positive recommendations we had received and were genuinely looking forward to our stay. Unfortunately, shortly after booking, we were informed that the room we had reserved was not actually available due to a system error. Whilst we appreciate being notified promptly, the handling of the situation thereafter was disappointing. The only alternative offered was a more expensive Superior Four Poster Room. As a four-poster bed was of no interest or value to us, this did not feel like an upgrade that justified the additional cost. From our perspective, we were effectively being asked to pay more because of an error that was entirely outside our control. What was most disappointing was the apparent lack of flexibility and willingness to prioritise customer satisfaction. Despite several exchanges, every response simply reiterated the circumstances of the original error and repeated the same two options: pay more for a room we did not want or cancel the booking altogether. There appeared to be little effort to consider an alternative solution or gesture of goodwill that reflected the inconvenience caused. Mistakes can happen in any business, and most customers understand that. However, customer service is often judged not by the mistake itself, but by how it is resolved. In this case, we were left with the impression that resolving the issue on terms acceptable to the customer was not a priority. In the end, we felt we had little choice but to cancel the reservation. To add further frustration, we were advised that it could take up to seven days for our refund to be processed, meaning the inconvenience continued beyond the cancellation itself. What concerns us most is that this experience occurred before we had even arrived at the hotel. If this is the level of flexibility and customer focus shown when dealing with a booking issue entirely of the hotel's making, it inevitably raises questions about how other customer concerns might be handled during a stay. Whilst we cannot comment on the accommodation itself, our experience of the booking process left us with little confidence that customer satisfaction is given the priority we would have expected from a hotel with such a strong reputation. Based solely on our experience of the reservation process, communication and resolution of a problem created by the hotel, we left feeling disappointed, frustrated and undervalued as prospective guests.

We booked a superior 4 post bed room for two nights at a cost of £300. This is NOT a 4 star hotel. The room was freezing with no way to adjust the temperature. We were under the covers fully clothed. The staff leave in the early evening so we had no one to contact. No welcome pack with any details. One of the bed sheets was torn really badly. The Matress was solid as were the pillows. We both ache from the two nights. We were close to calling it quits after the first night. The toilet bowl was very badly scratched which doesn't look nice at all. We found loads of someone's hair in the bed also. The website advertises streaming 'like netflix'. It's just digital TV. The bathroom also smelt like drains so the door had to be closed all the time. I looked on top of the bed canopy and it was disgusting and full of dust. My allergies and asthma were affected. Do not book this place. At half the price I would still be disappointed. This Lodge ruined our short break.
