About Lantern Guest House

Windsor Street places Lantern Guest House within easy reach of Edinburgh Waverley, half a mile away, making it a practical base for arriving by train or exploring the city on foot. The surrounding streets offer pubs, restaurants and entertainment close by, with walking and cycling routes for those who'd rather see the city at a slower pace, and Edinburgh Zoo among the local attractions worth the trip.

The guest house itself is set up more like a townhouse than a traditional hotel, with just three double rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and a pin code entry system that lets guests come and go independently. Rooms come with drinks provided, and there's a shared microwave for anyone wanting to heat up their own food. Free WiFi and luggage storage are available throughout, and family rooms can be arranged.

Outdoor seating gives guests somewhere to sit outside the rooms themselves, while golf, fishing and watersports are all listed as nearby options for those looking to fill a day beyond the city centre. It's a straightforward, self-contained stay suited to guests who value independence over hotel-style service.

The location was absolutely perfect, and the host couldn’t have been more hospitable. We honestly couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay in Edinburgh. It was within walking distance of all the main bus routes as well as many beautiful spots around the city. We booked the large front room, which was spacious, cozy, and gave us the feeling of truly being part of the city and the everyday life of Edinburgh locals. I can’t stress enough how excellent the host was—truly a highlight of our stay! Price was reasonable as well. Oh almost forgot to mention how incredibly comfortable the bed was!

Room was very clean. Location to everything in Edinburgh was close within walking distance. Owner was extremely friendly and helpful.

Room smells of damp - there’s a reason why there’s a dehumidifier plugged in 24/7. Room and bathroom need updating with mould on the tile grout. Shower is very tight - curtain smelling of damp. Only one small liquid soap for two of us over a three night stay. Unable to open the window and loads of electric adapters and wires plugged in. Room was cold as it’s below ground and the plug in heater was no good. Richard is friendly and responsive but £266 per night in August is rip off Britain at its worst…we know it’s the Fringe but not value for money given the state of the room. Avoid.

Great friendly people helped me with a few problems such a taxi etc and locations and nothing too much trouble. Would stay again soon when we next visit. Location 5 mins walk to main shops and 10 mins from castle. Fully recommend. Martin & Kim
