A substantial hotel building on Holyrood Park Road, The Scholar in Edinburgh houses 72 rooms across a set-up that manages to feel both generous in scale and comfortable in detail. Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, drinks in room, and the kind of quality toiletries and well-stocked tea trays that make a stay feel properly looked after. Family rooms are available for those travelling together, and a lift makes moving between floors straightforward.

What a wonderful evening at The Scholar Hotel's Summer Sessions! From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. The garden terrace is a beautiful setting for a summer evening, with fantastic live music creating the perfect backdrop. The cocktails were absolutely delicious, the food was excellent, and the service was exceptional from start to finish. A special thank you to Emelise, who was absolutely outstanding—so warm, friendly, attentive and genuinely lovely. She made us feel so welcome and is a real credit to The Scholar Hotel. I'd also like to give a special mention to Shaquille and Grace, who were both fantastic throughout the evening. They were friendly, professional, attentive and helped make the whole experience feel so enjoyable. Every member of staff we met went above and beyond to make sure everyone was having a fantastic time. It's rare to experience such consistently excellent hospitality. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Scholar Hotel to anyone looking for a great evening of live music, delicious food and expertly made cocktails in a beautiful setting. We'll definitely be back!

Gorgeous hotel, great value. We got married in Edinburgh and recommended this hotel to our guests, and we heard only good things. Having visited myself, the rooms looked comfortable and the location and amenities were so charming, particularly the garden terrace. Suzanne was also fabulous in arranging the group block/allocation for us. If we didn't live in Edinburgh, we would certainly enjoy staying here!

I checked in on July 12 and soon discovered dozens of tiny spiders throughout my room, including on the bedsheets. On multiple occasions, the spiders actually crawled on me while I was sitting or lying in bed, which made the room extremely uncomfortable. I was also very disappointed with the housekeeping. My sheets were not changed for several days and were finally changed only after I went downstairs and specifically asked that they be replaced. When I raised the issue at the front desk, I was told that this was because I had not placed the hotel’s “PLEASE MAKE UP THE ROOM” sign on my door. I have included a photograph of the actual sign with this review. I found the response defensive and unsatisfactory. Regardless of the hotel’s housekeeping-sign policy, I do not believe guests should have to specifically insist on clean bedding after several days, particularly when there were numerous tiny spiders in the room and on the bed. What makes the experience even more disappointing is that my stay cost a great deal. I expected considerably better cleanliness, housekeeping, and customer service. Edinburgh is a wonderful city and I hope to return, but unfortunately I would choose different accommodations next time.

We stayed at the Scholar for the first part of our vacation in Scotland. We chose The Scholar so we could step away from the crowds and into a quieter neighborhood for the evenings, which it turned out was a really good idea for us. The room was very comfortable and clean. The front desk and dining staff were welcoming and helpful. The hotel itself is stylish yet cozy. There is a bus stop directly across the street that is a short ride into the center of the city. It was a 20-30 minute walk from the center of the city to the hotel, so the bus was a good choice for us. We loved our stay.
