About Ely Guest House

Step into one of the six rooms at Ely Guest House and you'll find a straightforward, no-frills setup: en-suite bathroom, drinks provided, and in a handful of rooms a view across to Ely Cathedral. It's the kind of place that keeps things simple rather than polished, which suits guests happy to trade extras for a central, quiet base.

Outside the rooms there's a courtyard garden to sit in, and reception is staffed around the clock for whenever you arrive. The guest house itself doesn't run a restaurant, but pubs, bars and eateries are all close by in Ely, so there's no shortage of places to eat within easy reach.

The address on St Mary's Street puts the cathedral and the River Great Ouse within walking distance, and the surrounding area offers golf, fishing and watersports for those wanting to get outdoors, alongside entertainment options for evenings in town.

I arrived at 6.35pm at Ely Guest House only to find out the place locked and bolted and all the windows dark. I knocked and rung the doorbel, nobody answered. I found the note on the door saying to call the given two numbers on the arrival for the receptionist to come. I called both. One did not respond at all, the second one was answered by some man making inarticulated noises. After this I decided to find myself another accomodation for the night and finally ended up in Travelodge.

Dirty rooms, collect the keys from what looks like a takeaway. Stayed one night in the first room they put me in, dirty. Off white sheets (grey) it was a loft room, ceiling was so low you could not sit up in the bed. Hall outside my room had dirty old mattress against the wall. Moved me to another room for next night. Got told that I was not allowed to speak to the person in the next room in the corridor?! Do not stay here 🤢 stayed at many b&b’s and hotels and my first review, by far the worst place I’ve stayed.

Positives- the main guy was really friendly on arrival. Location excellent. Intersting building. Negatives - everything is a paid extra and the base price is already expensive. The curtains were terrible and room.was bright at 6am. Wallpaper peeling off wall. Bed small and not very comfortable.

Avoid like the plague - their prices on booking.com are double what you would pay direct with them from their website and I wouldn't even pay that. They only take cash. . . they won't accept card or bank transfer, They want £20 extra for checking in after 9pm and £3 just to use the wifi. No breakfast available and terrible, argumentative unhelpful customer services. I book loads of rooms and this has been my worst experience ever.
