About The Garrison

The Garrison is a 41-room hotel occupying a solid spot on High Street in Fort William, within the Highlands and close to Ben Nevis. It's a straightforward, well-kept base for the town rather than a grand building, with the kind of scale that allows a personal touch from staff without losing the facilities of a bigger hotel.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, and there are family and accessible options among the 41 available. Guests get complimentary snacks in their room, and breakfast is a particular strength, with a good range including gluten-free choices. There's a bar on site, free WiFi throughout, 24-hour reception, and luggage storage for those heading out for the day. Free on-site parking is provided, though space can be limited at busy times.

Beyond the front door, the area caters well to outdoor pursuits, with golf, fishing, cycling, walking, horse riding and watersports all nearby, alongside pubs, restaurants and entertainment. Pets are welcome, making it a reasonable choice for those exploring the Highlands with a dog in tow.

We stayed here for four nights in one of the suites, and unfortunately our experience was quite disappointing. The biggest issue was the ongoing construction work throughout the property. When I made the booking, I was advised that the construction would be completed by April, but this was not the case during our stay. The construction significantly affected the overall guest experience. Parking is also very limited. If you are unable to find one of the few available spaces, you will need to use nearby paid parking, which cost us approximately £20 per night. Guests staying in the suites should be aware that access can be quite challenging. We had to drag our luggage through an active construction area with construction vehicles and equipment present, and then carry it up two flights of stairs as there is no lift available. If you are travelling with a car, young children, or multiple pieces of luggage, I would strongly recommend considering other accommodation options. Cleanliness was another concern. We discovered that underneath the beds had clearly not been vacuumed for a long time and there was a significant accumulation of dust. Overall, the combination of ongoing construction, limited parking, difficult access to the suites, and cleanliness issues made our stay far less enjoyable than expected.

Love the urban chic and concept of the hotel. Tablet check in took forever, and was off putting, although there are staff behind the desk right in front of you. Other guests found it annoying also. Maybe they could arrange for guests to book in on line at their own convenience prior to their stay. Heating didn't come on until 6pm, but that was more than adequate and toasty. There is a notice in the bathroom to ask you to put a towel in front of the shower door to stop water going on to the carpet, so just be careful with that. If you're the sort of person that likes cupboards, you wont find one, but that wasn't a problem for me personally. I couldn't get an terrestrial tv channels, but logged into Netflix from my account. You'll need to pay just over £10.00 for parking in a car park about 4-5 minutes walk away, although the hotel looks like they are extending the exsisting car park, it's just not ideal if it's bucketing down with rain. The building works start at around 8am. All in all, I enjoyed my stay, comfy bed and great shower Brekkie was ok too. I,d stay again for sure

The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, although it's pricey for what you receive. It's a convenient location to walk down High Street (which is a wonderful pedestrian street!) But they have incredibly limited parking on site. You're more likely going to need to pay for a public car park. The staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend the breakfast though, it's top quality and by far the best hotel breakfast I have ever had

There's a lot I liked about the Garrison but a few things where it fell a little short. Check-in process was simple. This was via a self-service screen but a member of staff was on-hand to assist and answer questions. The bathroom had a couple of strange features. Despite some impressively weighty towels, there were two rather lightweight towel rails, one of which I wasn't surprised to see was loose. It did seem there was also a light missing/broken in the shower area as it was very dark and there was a switch that seemingly did nothing. It was great to have some decent snacks and drinks in the room. After finishing the WHW, it was good to be able to refuel a bit without having to immediately go in search of food. I didn't get to experience the breakfast as although it was included in my room rate, I had early starts both mornings during my stay.
