Capel Bethesda - Honeysuckle Cottage
Gwynedd
Honeysuckle Cottage is one half of a converted chapel built in 1825, set in a secluded valley where the Dulas river runs through the grounds. The single bedroom has a double bed, and downstairs there's a living room with TV and electric woodburner, a dining room, and a kitchen equipped for self-catering. A shower room completes the layout. Wi-Fi, heating, linen and towels are included, and you have private parking for one car and a lawned garden with seating.
This is a retreat for couples and those wanting quiet: children are not accommodated except babies under six months, and smoking is not permitted. The river, unfenced 20 yards from the house, and drops elsewhere in the grounds mean the setting requires care. The 1-acre garden is partly shared with the owners, who live in the chapel's upper storey, and another on-site property.
The location suits walkers and nature enthusiasts. Oak woods across the river, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, have paths leading to a gorge with waterfalls and on towards Aberllefenni and Corris. The Snowdonia uplands are within reach, while the RSPB reserve at Ynys Hir and the osprey project at Cors Dyfi lie nearby. Machynlleth, the Museum of Modern Art Wales and the Centre for Alternative Technology are all within striking distance. Shops, a pub and a restaurant are two miles away.
