Camping in Harvel

Harvel sits within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and while there is no campsite in the village itself, the wider North Downs around Meopham, Cobham and Luddesdown offer good ground for a countryside camping trip, whether in a small rural campsite, a farm pitch, or a glamping stay in a bell tent or shepherd's hut. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal, so it is worth booking an established site or asking permission directly rather than pitching up on downland or farmland unannounced.

The chalk downland and wooded valleys around Harvel make for attractive, if occasionally steep, walking and cycling country, with the North Downs Way running along the ridge above the village and quieter lanes threading between orchards and hop gardens below. Nearby Camer Country Park and the ancient woodlands around Cobham, including Ashenbank Wood, are good targets for day walks from a camping base, and the Meopham and Luddesdown area more generally is known for its rolling, unspoilt farmland rather than any dramatic scenery, which suits those after a genuinely quiet rural break.

Late spring through early autumn is the best window for camping here, when the bluebells have given way to full leaf cover and the orchards are in blossom or fruit, and when longer evenings make the most of a pitch with downland views. Because there is relatively little formal campsite infrastructure immediately around Harvel itself, glamping options - bell tents, shepherd's huts and small camping barns - in the wider Meopham, Cobham and Wrotham area are often the easiest way to enjoy this part of the Kent Downs without the need to bring extensive kit, while still waking up to orchard and downland views rather than a town.
