Hotels in Hognaston itself are scarce — this is a one-pub village, not a resort — so most visitors looking for a proper hotel stay base themselves nearby in Ashbourne, Wirksworth or Matlock, all within a short drive and each offering a decent choice of coaching inns, boutique B&Bs and small independent hotels. What Hognaston does offer is a handful of characterful rooms above the Red Lion Inn, the 17th-century pub at the heart of the village, which suits anyone wanting to wake up in the quiet of the countryside rather than in a town centre.

The appeal of staying in or near Hognaston is really about location: you're a couple of miles from Carsington Water, with its watersports centre, cycling and walking trails, and close enough to Ashbourne and Wirksworth for a wider choice of places to eat and things to do of an evening. If a full-service hotel with leisure facilities is what you're after, Matlock and the wider Derbyshire Dales have larger options, generally a 20-30 minute drive away. For most visitors, though, the draw of this part of Derbyshire is the surrounding countryside rather than the accommodation itself, so a comfortable, well-placed base is usually all that's needed before heading out to explore the dales, the reservoir and the old lead-mining villages that dot this stretch of the White Peak.

• Tissington Trail — a traffic-free walking and cycling route along a former railway line, running from near Ashbourne up through the White Peak, popular with families and cyclists.

The village is home to the Red Lion Inn, a traditional 17th-century, family-run pub serving food and offering accommodation, popular with walkers coming off the surrounding footpaths. Beyond the village, Ashbourne and Wirksworth both have a good spread of independent cafes, tearooms and pubs, and the visitor centre at Carsington Water has its own cafe overlooking the reservoir.

Hognaston sits within the Peak District National Park's southern reaches, and while the rolling White Peak scenery looks made for a tent, it's worth being clear from the outset: wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal in England, including here, so any camping trip needs to be on a proper, permitted site. The good news is that Derbyshire's campsites more than make up for it, with pitches scattered around Carsington Water and the surrounding dales offering some of the best rural camping in the county.

The terrain around Hognaston is gentle by Peak District standards — rolling limestone farmland and drystone-walled fields rather than high moorland — which makes it a comfortable spot for family camping and for those newer to pitching a tent outdoors. Nearby Carsington Water adds an obvious draw for campers, with its shoreline trail, birdwatching hides and watersports centre all within easy walking or cycling distance of several local sites. Expect a mix of small farm campsites, a handful of larger family-oriented grounds, and glamping options ranging from shepherd's huts to fully-equipped pods and yurts for anyone who wants the views without the guy ropes.

The best camping season here runs from late spring to early autumn, broadly May to September, when the ground is drier underfoot and the evenings are long enough to enjoy a walk or a paddle before dark. Summer school holidays bring the heaviest demand, particularly for pitches near Carsington Water, so booking ahead is sensible if you have specific dates in mind. Outside these months, Derbyshire's exposed hilltops and clay-heavy soils can make for a much wetter, colder experience, though a well-equipped glamping stay can still work well in the shoulder seasons if you want the scenery without the risk of a soggy tent. Whatever the season, Hognaston's position close to Ashbourne and Wirksworth means there's always somewhere nearby for a hot meal or a dry pub if the Peak District weather turns, as it often can.
