Adults-only Victorian guest house on Eskin Street in Keswick, an easy walk from Derwentwater and Theatre by the Lake.
About Glendale Guest House
Derwentwater and Theatre by the Lake are both within walking distance of Glendale Guest House, and the surrounding fells make Keswick a natural base for walking, cycling, fishing or a round of golf, with watersports also on offer nearby. Pubs, restaurants and other eateries are close at hand for evenings after a day out, and free parking can be found nearby for those arriving by car. The guest house itself is a period Victorian property with five en-suite rooms, run as adults-only accommodation. Rooms come with drinks and mountain views, and a cooked breakfast is included each morning, with packed lunches available for anyone heading out onto the hills. Free WiFi and 24 hour reception are provided throughout the stay. The style leans towards traditional period decor rather than contemporary design, in keeping with the building's character. It suits guests who want a straightforward, comfortable base close to Keswick's lake and theatre, without needing a car once they've arrived.
Eskin Street sits within easy reach of the town centre, making it a practical spot for exploring the northern Lake District on foot.

I arrived at the Guest House at 4pm. I rang the bell which has a camera. No answer despite pressing it a few times. I rang the mobile no which is in the porch. No answer. I couldn't get in so I walked into the town for something to do to pass the time. I went back at 5pm and rang the doorbell. The owner answered the door. When I said I had arrived at 4pm and couldn't get in I was told it was because she had left her 17 year old daughter in charge and she wouldn't have heard the bell because of the TV. The owner apologised and said I'd get a reduction if I came off Booking.com. I never got my reduction for this inconvenience as I didn't know how to come off Booking.com. Surely, the owner was responsible for being at the property to let guests in. I found out from her that I hadn't got a reply to ringing the mobile because it was her husband's number and he was abroad. Surely another reason she should have been there at 4pm when arrival time was 3pm onwards. The single bedroom was at the top of the house, up a number of stairs and was very small and cramped. The en-suite though well-appointed was very small and narrow. The door key was not easy to get in the lock but I learnt the art of getting the key in to turn it. When I asked to pay, the owner said she would use the card number she had. I agreed with that but when I asked for a receipt, she told me I would get one in an email from Booking.com. I had never heard of Booking.com doing this but I was in a rush to get away so could not be bothered to check if this was the case. I never got an email with a receipt of payment so I had been lied to about that. That was unnecessary.

A first impression really DOES count! Good location for Keswick town centre, Theatre by the Lake and Derwentwater. Parking available on the street. We received a very poor welcome from the host on our arrival. As a matter of courtesy, we thought it polite to let our hosts know that we had arrived. We were rebuffed at the door and told to come back later after 3pm to check-in. No smiling, no apology, no waiting for an explanation. We were treated as though we were hawkers. We had a first event to attend at Words by the Wster LitFest so we weren't wanting to check-in and knew the times. When we did arrive to check-in, the welcome was very different, chatty and informal with no mention of our dropping in earlier. My room was the smallest single room I have ever slept in. Literally no room to manoeuvre; the room door could not be accessed if the bathroom door was open. The sloping floor was very disorientating. The drains smelt faintly and the flush and the shower were extremely noisy. Breakfast times are fairly rigid, on the quarter hour we were told. We were offered one. Again, no apology for this, just hard and fast rule. The food itself was of good quality and quantity but my companion found a long, dark hair in hers and on politely informing the host, she was shut down immediately with total denial, claiming that she was mistaken and that her hair was tied back during cooking. The fact that her hair was free-flowing did not seem to register with her while she was talking to us. All in all, an attiitude re-adjustment is needed and paying guests should be made to feel welcome, but alas, not on this occasion. Keseick in a busy place and attracts a lot of visitors. Often, with tourist favourites, places like Keswick think that the visitors will keep on coming and shops and other businesss take the visttor for granted. I think we all deserve a decent standard of service and respect. We are paying for it, after all.

Great stay! The room was clean and cozy, breakfast was awesome, and the host was incredibly helpful. There was a bit of uncertainty at checking (process) but that was resolved quickly. It was a wonderful stay, and we would highly recommend.
