A gem of a museum. Although small, you could easily spend many hours here. There are of course panels to read, well presented; but also short films, audio, objects to see, touch and marvel at, and even dress-up for the children. The history of the immense WW1 cordite factory at Gretna is covered on the first floor, and on the second are the area's later involvements in WW2, such as RAF Annan, Barnado's evacuee children and nuclear power at Chapelcross (which we passed on the way south to the museum). Impressive and fascinating place.

I have wanted to visit here for a long time. Today I finally had the opportunity. We were not disappointed. If you are a history buff, particularly interested in WW1 this is the place to visit. Unusually in a very modern building this tells the story of the power of women who helped to win the war. Girls and young women came forward to make the explosives for the men and women at the front. Hundreds came from as far away as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle to make their contribution to the war effort. A factory and accommodation was built for this huge workforce where safely was an obvious necessity. We were in impressed at the displays,film footage and at the work involved to collect so many interesting items. Informative staff and a cosy cafe nearby supplying delicious cakes and especially good scones.

Genuinely one of the best museums I’ve been to. So well researched, well presented and well thought out. Interactive, hands on for kids, interesting and full of examples. Lots of bits to keep kids entertained while adults absorb so much. Admit I baulked at the price when I saw it on the door, as from the outside it doesn’t look particularly big, but it’s absolutely worth every penny. Cafe was lovely. Great soup and reasonably priced. Every volunteer and staff member was really nice. Sybelle in particular was outstanding. Well kept inside, toilets and grounds outside too (loved the wee displays outside as well). Thoroughly recommend.
