Londonderry sits on the banks of the River Foyle, its old city rising on a hill above the water and still ringed by the 17th-century walls that give the centre its shape. Streets fall away steeply from the walled core down towards the river, where newer bridges now link both banks, and the wider Foyle Valley opens out beyond the city into softer, greener country. It's a compact place to look at, with the historic centre easy to walk and the river a constant presence, whichever direction you're heading.
Inside the walls, the main draw is simply walking them - a complete circuit gives you views down over the rooftops, across the Foyle, and out towards the Derry hills beyond. The city below the walls has its own rhythm, with murals, museums and old streets to wander, and the riverside paths make for an easy way to see the place from a different angle, following the water as it curves through the valley.
Londonderry works well as a short break destination precisely because it's so easy to get your bearings - the walls, the river and the valley all orient you, and everything from your bed for the night to your dinner table is rarely far from one or the other.

Most visitors base themselves in or close to the walled city, where B&Bs like Bishop Gate BnB and Abbey Bed and Breakfast put you within reach of the walls and the main streets on foot. The Bishops Gate Hotel is right at the old city gate itself, while the Best Western Plus White Horse Hotel offers something a little further out for those who prefer more space. For a quieter, greener setting, Beech Hill Country House Hotel and Brackfield House sit away from the centre amid grounds and countryside, and Arkle House and Angel House Bed & Breakfast offer smaller, more personal options. If you're travelling by motorhome or caravan, Foyle Valley Motorhome And Caravan Park gives you a base right in the valley the city takes its name from, close to the water.
