Harris and its neighbouring islands offer dramatic coastlines, machair beaches on the west, and a wild, rocky interior shaped by ancient glaciers. Tigh Mairi sits in an elevated position with views across to Scalpay, accessed by a steep track with a cattle grid. The traditional croft house has been partly renovated, with a new shower room added in 2026, though it retains its character rather than modern finishes. Three bedrooms sleep six: two double beds with singles, and one single room. Downstairs there is a living room with open fire and Freeview TV, and a kitchen/dining space where you can cook full meals.
Heating comes from electric storage heaters and the open fire; bed linen, towels, electricity and wifi are all included. You have private parking for two cars and access to a garden, though the approach to the lower garden involves steep stone steps. The house does not have a dishwasher, and phone signal indoors is weak, though there is a landline. Tarbert, four miles away, has a shop, post office, restaurants, pubs, the Harris Tweed Shop and Harris Gin Distillery. The landscape changes dramatically across the island: rugged mountains and exposed rock in the north, open beaches and machair grassland to the west. One dog is welcome; smoking is not permitted.
