Community-run beachside pitches beside Harris's finest sand

About Horgabost Campsite

Horgabost sits on machair and rough grassland behind the dunes on Harris's west coast, run by the local grazings committee with sheep grazing freely across unmarked pitches. The draw is simple: tent and campervan spots look straight out over turquoise shallows and white sand toward the hills of North Harris, with Luskentyre visible across the bay and Taransay offshore. Facilities match the crofting land—toilets and water but no showers or hook-ups—so most arrive self-sufficient or nip into Tarbert for supplies.

The setting is gloriously exposed, which means Atlantic weather hits hard and a sturdy tent with good pegs is essential even in summer. In return you get one of Scotland's most photographed views from your doorstep, dark skies free of light pollution, and coastal walking routes on the doorstep. The site fills first-come in July and August when the beach draws day visitors too, so arrive early for a pitch near the dunes. Payment is honesty-box or via a warden who calls round; carry cash, since card facilities and mobile signal can both be patchy this far from town.

Great location when cycling the Hebridean Way. Good facilities which are clean. Indoor area to sit if the weather turns and you don't want to sit in your tent. Basic kitchen but there is a microwave and kettle. Great views of the dunes and the beach.

Stayed here during my bicycle trip. Cheap basic campsite with a lot of free room for tents with fantastic views of the ocean. The shower is paid which is a downside. Small indoor area where you can do dishes, use microwave and charge a phone. For 10£ per night for one tent it is worth it though. Note that it's a very open area which can be windy. Ground is easy for pegs though.

Fantastic location, well maintained and good size pitches and short distance to the most amazing beach. However the facilities are very basic. Washing up facilities perfectly adequate but the shower arrangements are not really acceptable in this day and age. The only thing separating you from those using the other bathroom facilities is a shower curtain. You need lockable doors not a shower curtain - hence my 3 stars. Also you get coach tours stopping here throughout the day and using the toilets so cleanliness can suffer as a result. But the price reflects this I guess. I do think £3 to use the toilet waste disposal is a bit steep.

Stayed 1 night. Pitches are mainly grass but pretty level. Good access to the beach. We had a little walk to the facilities, but they were clean & worked. Like most sites on the Island, they are functional.
