Blue Swallow

My first guesthouse and what an experience. A fully cooked breakfast daily, two lovely hosts who help out whenever they can, muffins baked for your birthday when you get back from a hike and a cute dog with endlessly energy. The beds were very comfortable, the room had coffee, tea, hot chocolate and some little snacks. Very quiet inside but if you do open the window you could get road noise but that didn’t bother us and can’t be helped. Had an issue with something and they solved it promptly and it was nice being able to ask them for suggestions about where to eat and they gave us homemade flapjack for our journey home.

Not typically someone that leaves reviews, but Alison and Karen were both amazing so felt compelled to do so in this case! All the reviews are accurate, they are both truly two exceptional hosts and I could not recommend staying enough! So many personal touches, from the homemade chocolate in the room to the homemade jams at breakfast - they even made me a flapjack for my journey back down south! If you are looking for somewhere to stay anywhere around this area, it has to be here!

To call this guest house faultless would be to do a disservice to the owners. I cannot speak highly enough of our stay. The host was so friendly, and the room was immaculate. The price was very affordable and the location perfect, having several castles and places of interest nearby. Ullswater Lake within a 20 minute drive, and located right in the middle of town, with secure, private parking. The owner shared some local tips for some great places to eat and drink. The attention to detail and service level were absolutely second to none. Including complimentary home made treats in the room, which was a lovely touch (and delicious). A wonderful cooked breakfast in the morning, with our choice of exactly what we wanted. The vast breakfast menu considered all allergy and dietary requirements. This is without question, the best night's stay we have had in the country. Blue Swallow Guest House has set the bar for what all other bed and breakfasts should aspire to be like. Thank you, and we will absolutely see you again when we next travel to Cumbria.

Stayed with my husband on Easter Sunday 2025. I can honestly say that this is the best guesthouse I have ever stayed in and Karen, Alison (& Bunty) are such warm hosts who obviously work extremely hard and love what they do. We only stayed for one night but the love, care and attention that so obviously went into our stay from the moment we booked to the moment we left was evident and so appreciated. We were lucky enough to stay in Room 4 and it was bright, homely and welcoming and so beautifully pristine and clean, almost like we were the first couple to stay! The attention to detail and little homebaked treats were a lovely surprise. If you are in the area and are looking for somewhere to stay then you will really miss out if you don’t book!! Thank you Karen and Alison; you made our stay memorable and we hope to see you in the future 😀
