About The Cornish Arms
For anyone planning days out on Dartmoor or exploring Devon's surrounding countryside, The Cornish Arms makes a sensible base: a hotel built around its own restaurant and bar on West Street in Tavistock, with free on-site parking for those arriving by car.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, drinks and free WiFi, and breakfast is included to set guests up before a day on the moor. The real draw, though, is downstairs, where the kitchen turns out dishes such as braised ox cheek, a Sunday roast and mango soufflé, served by staff who are consistently described as friendly and attentive. Prices are considered fair for the standard of cooking on offer.
Golf, fishing and cycling can all be arranged nearby, and there are further pubs and restaurants within easy reach for anyone wanting to explore beyond the hotel's own table. It suits travellers who want a comfortable, uncomplicated stay with a genuinely good meal at the end of the day, rather than a destination spa or a strictly self-catering break.

What guests say
The food was excellent quality produce, cooked to perfection and the portions, albeit a hint of profit maximisation, we're measured to the exact mouthful. All of this is perfect if the food comes out hot and all at the same time, with the right amount of knives and forks....Which ours was not. Also, and most annoyingly, I wouldn't suggest sitting in the beer garden to eat, as the constant barking of the many dogs will make conversation difficult. I'm all for dogs in pubs, but not were uncontrolled barking spoils the atmosphere. Some of the aforementioned negatives are most likely because the younger staff are still learning, never the less, management didn't seem to have much of control of the floor and this was a shame to see, as it was almost one of the best meals I'd had for a while.

Stopped for lunch, expecting the usual pub lunch. Got something near to Michelin Star quality in food, without the high price and diminished quantity. Started with mushroom soup with bread rolls which I rated top class for taste and texture. For mains the hake and king prawns another excellent meal for the combination of taste and texture. Was not going to have a dessert, until I saw the option of Mango soufflé, pineapple compote, coconut sorbet and clotted cream. The souffle was heaven on a plate. As each course came the highest of perfection increased. Never had such a perfect meal before - 12 out of 10 as far as I am concerned. And that is after eating at all sorts of restaurants across Europe and America on business and otherwise. Yes slightly more expensive than a normal pub lunch; but the quality was excellent and far exceeded the price. During the whole experience the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and gave advice as to menu content and to booking a table for lunch if bringing a dog, so that they can set up a table in the bar area or outside. Will certainly be going back again.

Absolutely fantastic experience, to kick off Tosh helped me out with sorting out a few birthday things. The food, atmosphere and all the staff were fantastic.. but the food is another level...my Beef was so tender it just feel apart, the maple pork beautiful as was the monkfish.. all came out with seasonal veg, good choices for kids, the souffle to finish was excellent...all in all a very easy review to write and an utterly fantastic experience 👏👏👏

Had a delicious lunch with friends on bank holiday weekend. Would recommend all the dishes we chose! Dog friendly in the bar area, and lovely decor and staff. Service was a little slow but luckily we weren't in a rush. Appreciated the great wine list too. Came to £70pp for a 3 course meal with a glass of wine and coffee, and would definitely come back. Thanks!
